Title: HELP Savage will turn off with the choke off
Post by Marcial on 05/29/13 at 12:17:49

I recently bought my 03 savage. It has 11,500 miles aftermarket jardine exhaust. It ran fine until it was time to pump gas. Then it began to turn off after starting. At first it would start on with the choke all the way on but now only with choke on half way. I took off the spark plug and it was black. I figured I need to clean the carb and jets but have t had time. What do you fellow members think? Please help I really want to get back to riding soon. Thanks in advance.

Im confused.

Before the problem you had to have full choke to start it?
Now, just 1/2 choke?
But if you push the choke in, it dies?
All this after you gassed it up?
Hows the idle speed? If you raise it, will it keep running?
Have ya drained the bowl into a jar to see if its nasty?

Sorry for the confusion
Initially the bike would run great other than the backfiring
Then the problem began I needed to take the choke all the way out (on) or it would die at start up. Thought it was a warm up issue. When riding I would turn choke off but it would stall and die. The following day it would not start. I drained the gas took off tank and the spark plug and it was black air filter was cleaned a bit. After cleaning the plug and putting the bike back. It fired up, but this time only with the choke half way. I haven't messed with the idle just yet. And when you say bowl what are you referring to? Thanks for the quick response.

The carburetor bowl. It has a nipple & a screw. YOu can drain it & see if theres crud in there.
If the idle is low it will starve the cam for oil. Costly & painful repair.
If youre having problems just make sure youre keeping it running at at least 1,000 RPM while you work thru it all.

I will most likely take the carb off this weekend and clean it. Hopefully this gets the job done.
