Title: Starter Alternatives?
Post by 89eggum on 05/23/13 at 21:26:16

Recently my starter on my 86 LS650 started making strange noises. I think it may be going out. Is there any alternative to the recommended starter for this?

more likely the teeth on the starter clutch.
pull the starter and spin the gears

There is an index in the Tecnhical Section that helps you to find repair articles.

Here is an article on the 4 speed clutch.....which could be your problem.

Nice, try and explain that to your LEO.

"yes sir, they're for the starter"
"boy, starter guns aren't allowed to be discharged either
and with a shell like that, you must be startin' a race between deaf elephants"

I agree with Verslagen, Mine was making a noise that sounded like teeth on the gears slipping. It was the starter clutch. Luckily my LS400 is identical. So while getting rebuilt I swapped them over.
All Fixed. :)

I have one for sale. I recently swapped it with the one on my bike to make sure it works, and it does.  If you are interested I will sell it for $80 shipped US.  E-mail gdrseeker@gmail.com

I also have both the smaller starter idle gears and pins they are part #1 #2 #3 and #4 on the diagram in the linked posting above. mine are pre 1995 so they dont have the limiter, but I will throw them in cheap.
