Title: Emotional Extortion
Post by Dane Allen on 05/23/13 at 16:40:44

Just had an interesting experience, I am home sick from work today and the doorbell rings. My two Boston Terriers go nuts, per the usual and my wife answers the door. Turns out my city snuck in an ordinance that you have to get a special license for your dogs in addition to the current license and shots records and junk you already have to have. If you haven't gotten or known to get the special extra license then you get an $800+ citation.

You know why they don't require this of cats? Cats don't bark when the doorbell rings so it is very hard to find them but dogs, now there is a cash cow for a city that has squandered all it's money. Fortunately for me, the smug, arrogant officer is male and my wife is a cry-on-a-dime extra-emotional female who also doesn't have a good sense of the passage of time.

After a 25 minute emotional filibuster we were extorted for only $47 which is the cost of the extra license and get-out-of-citation-free-card for paying the extra "taxes" to the extortionist. Government can sure be ruthless!!

Could you perchance registered your guns at the same time and received a multi-citation discount?  :-/

Sure you weren't ripped off by a scam artists?

What is the new license exactly?

I'm with verslagen.  I would have told them to wait at the door & called your local town's city hall or police station to ask.  Unfortunately, it looks like you may have lost $47.

Also, if you let them in your house, hopefully they weren't casing the place.

Economy is bad, people are getting really creative with their scams.

He was an uniformed officer with a city vehicle and citation pad all ready to go. The paperwork lhe left behind looked pretty legit too. Lot's of gov't speak and addresses of the gov't building at which I need to appear. Some new county/city cooperation to get more money out of the citizenry. All dogs need the rabies vaccination and the license that says it have been vaccinated in addition to all the other vaccinations.

Oh, we didn't pay anything and the guy never got in. We have to go down to the county department of animal services (yes, we have that now) and go through the bureaucratic mess within 10 days.

;D ;D ;D And notice that only dogs are targeted. They probably will require licenses for children soon, anything for revenue.

Actually, I've had this happen to me too. You have to register the dogs, so its one of those things that just has to be done. Kinda sucks.

The problem with it is that there is no notice and then the guy comes around with the "ignorance of the law is not a defense" BS which was reasonable before the days of 4,000 new regs a year. No one knows all these laws, they know that and use it against you to get more money because you are expected to memorized every law ever added to the codes.

"What?? You say you didn't know a secret plan was established to fine you $900 if you didn't get the proper license?? Ignorance of the law is no defense, we will be garnishing your wages!!"

The roads in that state go out as well as in. I would not live there. :-?

In the south many places treat their dogs as family and there may be some places that they have birth certificates. I have a friend who named his first born son after his bird dog. :o

Well ... I don't know about that... I do know there been some deaths when someones bird dog ends up dead and there is a responsible party. I also know that some dogs end up worth stupid high money. Hurt that dog and you will wish it were "just" a kid. My father in law got sued when he shot a dog for killing his calves. It was touch and go... the value of a commodity good (the calve) versus the value of a prized family pet.  As I recall, it came out a wash. I remember shooting at ( and missing) the same dog.

PS; I love dogs.
PPS: But not ones that are 1/2 mile from home and chasing the calves.

Ooooo, poor Daney, asked to obey the law once again...poor you. The way I see it you have a few options...

1. Be a good citizen and comply with the ordinance.

2. Blow the MF authorities away with something from your (in case I have to over-throw the government) arsenal.

3. Get the hell out the country and the government you hate so much and settle in Somalia or some other place where there is no government, no laws, no rules, and you can amass and fire off all the weapons and super weapons you can afford, why you can even thrill kill with impunity....your choice.

Dane - given the time you spend on this forum, I suspect you have time to research this new fee.  Some governments have started upping the old dog fees, some seem to be breaking new ground.  Dogs are an expensive issue for a community.  Dog officers, vets, kennels, and finally putting the unclaimed down..think of the millions of dogs per year.
In the '50's on Cape Cod, it was rumored that each September the local police and associates would hold a hunt, and killed all the strays left behind by the vacationers, the nice people who bought their kids a puppy for the Summer but couldn't or wouldn't bring the pups back home to Boston or NYC.

Good luck anyway..did they post the new fees as required by local law?
$800.00 seems stiff- did anyone actually OK this??? :-?

Yeah, that was pretty stupid post, I have been ignoring him on the TT for the same reason. Looks like he misses me, pretty sad, really. Anyway, back to the subject at hand.

I will admit that legalese, ordinances and such are not my strong suit. I never had this issue anywhere I have lived before and I am not being sarcastic when I say I don't go randomly browsing the California Municipal Codes looking for corruption or other hidden tax traps. Even if I did find a bunch of mumbo-jumbo I probably couldn't understand the convoluted legal double speak anyway. CALPERS (public employee golden pension plan) is way underfunded so they are desperate to raise money anyway they can. It's not the fees they want but the penalties.

I think  the entire post belongs iin the TT section.  The guidlines for the Cafe state:  "Keep the MAJORITY of stuff in here motorcycle related but some other stuff is OK."

What this thread has evloved to is not OK.......

This entire thread is politically based........I am not a fan of big governmet and believe things have gotten way out of hand.  The Cafe however is not intended for these discussions.

I did make the extra effort to avoid political or religious over/under tones, to me it's just a story about what happened the other day that I thought I would share with the group. This seems like something locals would talk about in a cafe or coffee shop.

And I am avoiding the TT as it seems to have taken on more of a dark side in that last few weeks.
