Title: New to the forum and the savage
Post by squeaks on 05/22/13 at 11:05:05

I am picking up a 87 savage 650 tomorrow and am very excited about it. I have read a ton of great things about these bikes.  It will need a little TLC but it is a real gem. Just thought I would introduce myself.

Welcome!! There is a ton on info on the forum. Make sure you read the tech threads for new owners about oil, petcock and , especially in your case, cam-chain tensioner. Have a great day!!

Thanks for the welcome. I have been browsing the sight for the past 3 days, was just waiting on approval. I already have a petcock on its way and I will be ordering the cam chain tensioner in the next few days.

The Verslagen tensioner....right?  A new factory tensioner will not correct anything.

Yeah the verslagen tensioner, and I have been reading quite a bit about oil on here. I think I will lay low on that till I'm not so new around here.

Been a nickname I have had for 10 years. Couldn't escape it so I embrace it. And bike is being dropped off tomorrow. Truck I was going to use to pick up had starter go out.

Sea Foam? Gar Bahge? Eaux Neaux! Let us not listen to those fringe elements,,

I did doubt, but, when added to my backhoe fuel the scary sounding knock went away. It was an injector p[roblem. I had them overhauled & no longer need it, but Ive used it in many things & SEEN improvement that other injector cleaners/gas treatments did not do.

Sea Foam is a solvent. It works well for what it was intended to do. Its just not a miracle cure. :)

Well,, NO, its not a Miracle Cure,, neither is chikkin SOOP, but dang,, its Good for some stuff,,

She got dropped off today. A little rough but should clean up. Already took some 0000 steel wool to the chrome. only problem is it sounds like it has a miss and flutters a bit while riding.

If the carb is stock.....I suspect a good cleaning, re-jetting and the spacer mod will make the flutter and miss go away.  Does this slight flutter and miss happen at slower speeds when you are just barely opening the throttle?

Yes it does. Where would I get the spacers?

Here is a thread on the issue.

http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=tech;action=display;num=1104205157

You can get washersr and use them to replace the spacer.  Some people use 3 on top of the needle - my bike liked 2 with a 50 pilor jet and 150 main jet.

You can get the jetset form Lancer:
http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1336741909

Or if you know what you need JetsRus can sell them to you.

Here is a thread on how to take the carb apart.  For jet changes you don't need to remove the jets at the top of the carb body, or the needle and seat parts.
http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=tech;action=display;num=1191899985

You are an hour and a half away from me.  If you want to bring your bike or carb up someday......We can fix it!

Welcome, and be forewarned, it's a tough group.  As a suggestion, get the in and out (air filters, muffler etc) on the bike before you mess with the carb settings.  Congrats, looks like  you got one of the faster black ones. ;)   ps.  olde bikes need dino oil. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Any idea where I can get a new air mixture screw?

Title: Re: New to the forum and the savage
Post by apache snow on 05/30/13 at 18:07:45

Its actually a fuel mixture screw. If the screw is on the engine side it adjust the fuel. If it is on the air filter side it adjust air.

Took the exhaust off to remove the strait pipe and find out they had neglected to put a gasket back on it after welding the pipe on the header.
But here is what I had to deal with.

Replaced the front brake pads, got the exhaust almost ready to put on and replaced the old petcock with the raptor one. Almost forgot, found a nice set of saddle bags for it.

Most Savages evolve...
It's a very evolutionary bike... definitely not revolutionary... but, they do lend themselves well to evolution...

I think we're second only to Harely's for that... and we are breaking new ground when we evolve...
...Ain't nothin' a Harley owner can do, that ain't been done before...
