Title: Hoping to ride back "home"
Post by Greg on 05/21/13 at 09:51:18

I am going to a graduation party for some cousins on June 2. They are about a 6 hour ride one way. It will be the longest ride I will have done to date. The weather looks like it is only going to have showers at either end of the trip. I know they can't predict anything more than a few minutes out but I am hoping it doesn't change to storms. I bought this cheap bag to attach to my back rest for my clothing and my saddlebags should be big enough to hold rain gear, cool weather gear, etc. I am excited!

Steal...  what was shipping on that?...

I'm tempted... but, I don't have a sissy bar...
...(plenty sissy enough without one)... :-?...

Shipping was like $9. I got the bag only. I wanted a new helmet but they were out of the closeout I was looking at. The only real issue, if it is one, is the side flaps aren't real long. The gap may allow rain to enter. I only plan on using it for travel and will put my clothes in a plastic bag as well. To me it is a not issue.

I've only done one over nighter and put my underwear and socks in plastic snap lock bags and shirts and jeans in larger plastic bags. Just remember to let the air out of the snap lock bags as you seal them up. It wilol be an interesting test to see how well your new bag keeps the water out.

So when you say it is a 6 hour trip.  You got to stop for gas every 100 miles, stretch your legs, eat, drink.....un-drink.  Those 6 hour trips take 8 hours!

Nice bag at a helluva price. I've never really had a problem with rain getting in my bags, even cheap ones, back when I could still put them on my bike. I've ridden in heavy down pours and hail before. I usually put everything in a grocery bag and tied it up.

Where is home for you?

P.S. I'd also run a strap through that top loop to something secure in case it decides to jump off the sissy bar.

Yeah, the 6 hour trip will probably be closer to 8 or so with all the stops. Plus, I would like to take some scenic routes instead of the highway.

"Home" is western PA in Hermitage. I am actually passing through that just into Ohio for my cousins' graduations.

I was thinking of adding a strap to the bottom to make it a little more difficult for people with sticky fingers at rest stops.

Or you could get a strap and carry it as your "man purse".

I had Jafrum's SB70 sissy bar bag on my V Star 650.  I was really pleased with the quality and size of the bag.  It held up well and the guy that bought the bike from me is still using it.  Good luck with your road trip!

My final decision on bike vs car will be Friday but it isn't looking too promising as of now. I would be riding in storms the way there, while there, and the way back. I don't mind getting wet but hours in storms ain't my kind of fun.

People driving cars dont Expect to see bikes in that kind of weather. Makes it all the easier for them to fail to see you.

As long as it's broad daylight, it's one thing.
After sunset, it's a completely different issue.

4-6-18 wheeled vehicles will simply NOT see you.
AND
with wet roads not reflecting light back at you, you will NOT see where the road goes, nor where the potholes are, etc.
Entirely by guesswork...
AND
the Savage's taillight is not something I would bet my life on...
:-X
I know, I rode some 400 miles in the rain at night once, and arrived absolutely terrified !
:o :o :o
