Bios needs an upgrade, and I can't find one...(blue screen of death)... D848PFT2 Intel MB...

Sooo,... computers are confusing nowadays...
What do I need?...

I'm looking in the $200 range, refurbished is okay...

Windows 7,.. or 8?... I have XP disc now...

I have a 1.5T HD I want to install... (with a 100gig partition for OS)...
Emphasis on video...

Ubuntu Linux - it's not that bad.

Might want to just buy another Motherboard instead of a whole new machine...

I buy all my refurbished PCs from New Egg. I have never had any issues. I choose ones with an OS and away I go!

craigslist may be your only hope for something that cheap. I built my mom a PC from scratch a few months ago thinking I could keep the price pretty low ( buy from newegg) we still ended up well over $600.

I would be looking to drop XP for Win 7
I would stay away from Win 8 for a non-touch desktop
other than that... use defines needs
CPU - basically performance defines price with a slight nod to AMD
Memory - bah unless your overclocking - the motherboard will tell you this

Around here- a few folks will buy up surplus government Dells, and flip them. Generally for less than $200. As long as its not too old and comes with Win 7 ( most do) then it makes a fine little web browsing PC.

Yea I've bought refurbished from Newegg and TigerDirect with no issues at all, probably a dozen or so PC's over the past 8 years for friends and family.   As long as you just need it to surf the web, check emails, watch videos on YouTube and stuff you can get a Dell or HP refurb for around $200   ;)

The biggest mother with swapping motherboards is:
Does it have the right connections you need for the rest of your pieces?
Hard drive (IDE, SCSI, SATA, MFM, etc)
Floppy Drive(s), if you still use 'em
Slotted cards (PCI, AGP, ISA, etc)
Power supply (Lots of different flavors)
USB (everything should have them these days)
Front panel connectors (you can probably make them fit.. some how)

Good luck if you go that route..

I wouldn't waste your money on Windows 8, unless you want to paint pretty pics all day.
