Post by renegade1 on 05/15/13 at 23:03:09

Hey guys been a while but im working on my bike again and im excited to do some work.
Wondering if anyone had lowered their rear shocks? I was thinking about two inches. sound good or no? and can i take them apart to paint them or how do i go about this? If anyone can help me it'll be highly appreciated.

I don't think the stock shocks have 2" to give...

Are you looking for a hardtail,... or 1/4" travel?... ;D...

You can't lower them.....however, you can search ebay for some shorter ones!

You can also lower the fender so it rides closer to the tire.

Actually you can lower them, just not 2" worth. I came across a link not too long ago of someone who took apart the shocks off an LS650 and cut the springs down 3/4" I believe it was and installed them on a different bike. They had a complete visual tutorial on the process, sorry but I didn't bookmark it as I was looking for something else   :-?

You can lower them. But it would take fab work to make new mounts on the swingarm. It would be easier and to get shorter shocks.

any of you know what rear shocks would work? AND how would I lower the rear fender? that sounds like it would look sweet

Someone mentioned not being able to paint the springs on the rear shock because they flex and the paint will chip?  Not sure if this is true but I was thinking about painting mine with plasti dip or something that will flex.

I lowered my rear fender by simply putting spacers between the fender and the top mounting point. My picture is gone due to changing web hosts and forgetting to save it. I will look for the original.

I think that most paints are flexible enough to handle the flexing of a spring.  I installed lowering springs on my car and they were painted, some of the sports cars I have owned had painted springs....no issues and the paint stayed on.

I think the real issue on the Savage Shocks is surface prep....getting a good base for the paint to stick to.  Paint is not fond of sticking to shiny chrome, and you can't sandblast the springs while they are on the shocks.  I am not sure how you could sand them by hand and get a decent job where the springs touch the top and bottom portions of the shocks.

You COULD take them apart and cut the springs, but then you'll be bottoming out everything on everything - shock, fender, butt  ;D Plus it'll probably ride like crap, like those kids in Hondas with cut springs.

Burly Slammers are the lowest shocks I know of, but they are 10.5" eye-to-eye, which is the same as the savage.

FYI. I took apart and painted the shocks on my 78 goldwing cafe bike with epoxy paint found at Advanced auto. It has a picture of a motorcycle shock on the can. It has chipped off some, probably because it is hard to prep chrome springs and I didn't use a primer. Plasti dip is the way to go. it is a rubberized coating. You can by spray cans at Lowes in white, black, and safety yellow   :D

I found this ......tells you hot to take the Savage shocks apart.

Then you can take yours springs and get them sandblasted...then paint them or powder coat them.....or coat them with Plastidip.

My original comparison photos were taken with an old cell phone and I don't seem to have saved them either. I have a side shot of my bike with the lowered fender. It is a substantial difference. I used about a 3/4" spacer and the rear of the fender dropped about 2". I am a big man and I have never bottomed out.

I found the backup of my comparison photos while looking for something else. It gives the appearance of shorter shocks without the additional backache.

Wow, it's impressive how it tricks your eyes... the shocks seems really shorter and the look improves a lot...

Sounds like that's going to be nice and fun haha. Some exciting news though ... I was outside with my kid just now and a guy that lives half a block away from me ripped by on a savage! I'm going to have to go  and check it out some time, and it sounds pretty gnarly.

I really want to do this rear fender lowering.  Can you be a bit more detailed on how you did this??
