Title: Special tools for the Savage/S40
Post by DavidOfMA on 05/15/13 at 11:00:37

It occurred to me while working on my bike this weekend that a list of "special" tools for typical maintenance would be helpful. So far, besides the usual assortment of screwdrivers, metric wrenches, and pliers I'd use for a car, at 10,000 miles on my S40, I've acquired the following in roughly this order:

Offset screwdriver for adjusting rear shocks
14mm ratchet wrench for changing oil
Torque wrench that measures inch-pounds
Magnetic driver for getting at tiny screws without losing them
PB Blaster for unfreezing stuck carb screws
Carb cleaning wires
Harbor Freight small impact driver for loosening carb screws
Serrated #2 Phillips screwdriver bit (from Lowes) for carb screw removal
.003 & .004 bent feeler gauges for valve adjustment
Cable oiler for throttle and clutch cable oiling

What else are those of us new (or new again) to motorcycle maintenance likely to need as we get more comfortable working on this bike and as things continue to wear?

An absolute must have for anyone working on motorycles with phillips head screws.....is an Impact Driver.

Offset driver (flat) for holding valve adjusters while snugging the jam nut.

Yes, that would have been handy last weekend.
