Title: Virtual Tour of Rome's Basilicas
Post by mpescatori on 05/13/13 at 04:39:35

I received these from a fellow BMW biker I befriended in Austria.

It was one of those things...

Ride 500 miles on the Friday to a Charity Ride, ride 200 miles on the Saturday Charity Ride, ride another 500 miles back home on the Sunday...
...ride 20 miles to work on Monday...  ;) talk about monkeybutt !!!  ;D

Anyway, these are the links he sent, and I have to say I didn't know they existed !

Sistine Chapel http://www.vatican.va/various/cappelle/sistina_vr/index.html

St. Peter's Basilica http://www.vatican.va/various/basiliche/san_pietro/vr_tour/index-en.html

St.Paul's Basilica http://www.vatican.va/various/basiliche/san_paolo/vr_tour/index-it.html

St.John in Lateran http://www.vatican.va/various/basiliche/san_giovanni/vr_tour/Media/VR/Lateran_Nave1/index.html

It is one of those "16 Gazillion pixel photoshoot", just (slowly) move the mounse and zoom in&out with the +/- buttons.

I'll see if I can find any more...  ;)

PS If you have 56k dialup, forget it, these are not pictures but 360°scenarios, they must be HUGE!
Also, to maneuver, keep left mouse button clicked and drag   s l o w l y
Last, no, we do not have 24/7 heavenly choirs chanting inside the vatican, it's just sound effects on the website... ;)

Basilica of S. Maria Maggiore http://www.vatican.va/various/basiliche/sm_maggiore/vr_tour/index-it.html

(couldn't transalte this into English, "St.Mary Major" sounds like an Officer's name!)

Coliseum http://www.italiavirtualtour.it/dettaglio.php?id=1231

Rome, in general
http://rome.arounder.com/ (click and choose English, top right hand corner)

Pisa, in general
http://pisa.arounder.com/

Venice, in general
http://venezia.arounder.com/

With "X.arounder.com" just write the name of the city you wish to visit where the "X" is  :) http://www.arounder.com/

Actually, you are right. There were already a gazillion churches named after the Virgin in those days, but not a Basilica.
So they named the Basilica "Sancta Maria Major" to tell that that was the big one.

;)
