Title: 87 Basket case project
Post by shovelbum87 on 05/11/13 at 10:33:51

Hi All,
Here is what we got
1987 Savage 650 11,000 miles. Has not run in at least two years. I bought it about a month ago to upgrade from my first bike (99 250 Marauder loved that thing!) I only upgraded because I travel about 100 miles a day for work and the 250 was just too small to take on the highway.
The Savage turned over so I picked it up cheap! real cheap. I brought it home and started working on it. The carb was pretty gummed up, cleaned that the slide looks a little scored so Im planning on getting a complete rebuild for that. Gas tank was seriously hosed, cleaned most of the rust out of it and changed the pet out. She has some wiring issues, chaffed wires going up to the speedo, and the yellow wires that go from the regulator? were cut, replaced by somone that had no clue and had also apparently burned and caught fire, I cleaned that up and heat shrinked those after soldering back together. Already had to replace that stupid oil plug under the head cover (briliant idea Suzuki engineers)
Now for the problem, Im guessing that its just from the crappy diaphram but I thought I would run it by you all.
When I try to start her, the head unloader only moves once in a while (every fifth or sixth attemt to start) turns over fine, she will start and run on ether but when trying to use just gas she doesnt want to run, almost like there is a dead spot on the lower half of the throttle, and she will not start without ether. She also doesnt run for long once I get her to run, as long as I keep giving her a shot of ether she would keep running but as soon as the ether is gone she dies?
[smiley=shocked.gif]

Now Im not really that good with carbs (last time I had to deal with one that was difficult was an old carter off an mg and that was 10 years ago)
I am pretty mechanically inclined so I would really rather do all the work myself

Any one with an idea I would love to hear it.

As always thanks for the help!

If you've tackled a Carter,... this carb is cake... ;)...

By "Head unlooder" (cool name!) I guessing Decompression solenoid...
That's under the tank... a big round clunky thing... and it can get sticky and gummed up, just like the carb slide... (a kinda' gummy oil build-up)...
(you can take it apart and clean it, and it'll hit, slicker n' snot)...

Then,.. there's the running problem...
Gonna' guess it's carb related... (air filter's clean?)...
I'll guess that rusty tank is sending tiny bits down,.. and plugging things up...
You might want to add an in-line filter... and clean the jets, passages, and idle mix screw, again...
Don't worry too much about minor scour marks on the slide, unless they hamper smoothness of movement... make sure any gumminess is gone from the slide and passage, and the rubber diaphragm at the top is not torn, rotted or poorly seated...

That's all I got... :-?...

Sorry, Decompression solenoid/ head unloader (thats my diesel side coming out) same difference in my world but I did take it out an clean it really well and then lubed it a bit to make it move freely. (should it unload every time I try to start the bike?)
as far as the fuel tank, im currently not even using that, I have an "IV" old mini bike plastic tank that I can hang on the handlebars while I work on her, I find the tank was getting in the way. I am planning on running an inline filter on it just in case. I think the tank will be ok shes currently sitting on my air compressor with some nuts and bolts sort of shakin the heck out of it, I hope it works.
The slide is scored but it moves fine. so I guess it should run? Im at whits end on this one.
It should be simple.... I have air, spark for sure, I assume that fuel is not getting out of the bowl maybe??? I guess I will do a complete rebuild on the carb and see whats up.
Thanks! so much Serowbot

Make sure to cover the port for the petcock vacuum line on your carb. If you don't seal it off, you're looking at a monstrous vacuum leak. The little red rubber plug off a bike battery is just the right size...

For a vacuum slide CV, the BS40 is a tolerable carburetor. It can't hold a candle to a nice cable operated slide Mikuni, but it's decent.

I did put caps on all of the vacuum ports for the pet. I wouldnt mind a nice Mikuni though!

Hmm... only one vacuum line... right-side of carb,(usually covered with a spring)...
Two other lines are vent tubes for the floatbowl... they should be open to atmosphere... (run up like this)(jets can't draw against vacuum if they're blocked)...

Really?????? HHHHMMMMMM!!!! I'm gonna have to look at that, I know that the po had all but one  blocked off, then they had put some sort of fuel shut off under the pet... I will have to check that out!
Can you send pics of which one on the right gets blocked?

You might have just saved me from going absolutely bonkers!!!  [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif] :-*

The vacuum tap in this shot has the rubber nipple cover...(top arrow)...
The line to the pet,.. is the other arrow, with a golf tee blocking it...( it normally comes off that tap... (as you can see, it draws vacuum from the intake manifold pressure)...

I think I should have read the original thread completely prior to deciding I knew what was going on. I will un cap the others and see if she can finally pull some fuel through the carb!!! I am so freakin excited! I have had this thing for over a month and still havent gotten to ride it yet!! WWWWOOOOOOO HHHHHOOOOO

Alas, This abhorant thing called work has caused me to leave her devistatingly alone for over a week. I hope to give her a try in the morning. I assure you I will keep you posted. But since ALL of the vac lines were plugged as Dave awakened me to I am pretty sure she was bassically vapor-locking. So I have faith that she will fire up and run off gas now! ;)

My next issue is that when I put the tank back on the blue wire that goes to the indicator light is partially defunked and has some chaffing and when I put the booster pack on her I hear some major electrical noise almost like a 60 cycle hum coming from it so I must repair the wiring harness. I already had to fix the wires from the regulator cause the po was using wire nuts and duct tape... omg idiot!

Title: Re: 87 Basket case project
Post by shovelbum87 on 05/19/13 at 16:23:19

Unfortunately I did not get to work on her much. My hubby works third shift friday through monday so I didnt want to wake him up so Im hoping to get back to her tomorrow after work. I did get some things done. Painted the motor, changed out the side covers. tried to fix some of the wiring issues that Alvin and the chipmunks created. and I got frustraited while trying to put my old bags on her. Has anyone put bags on theirs without the chrome side pieces? Im concerned that it might put the bags too close to the tire and or belt...

Title: Re: 87 Basket case project
Post by WD on 05/19/13 at 19:24:12

No problem. Space them farther out, I use 2x3 mahogany scrap salvaged from an old packing crate.. Drill the wood to match the fender holes, then drill the bag backs to match the wood. Through bolt the entire mess together and it's good to go. But, I run Saddleman bags with hard bag inserts. If you have soft bags, add some 1/8" luan or similar doorskin to the rear panel to stiffen them up.

Thanks so much!

If you are going to walk into a regular lumber place or Lowe's/Home Depot I'd recommend Cedar if you are going to use wood ShovelBum, it's the best bang for your buck as far as weather resistant, durable, light and not too expensive.

Well, I unplugged those vacuum caps today, Changed out my cracked, shredded belt (Thanks gdrseeker) and When I tried to turn her over... batts mostly dead. GRRR ok thats fine throw it on a charger. long story short, she tries to fire up but I gotta gets a bigga batt. The one out of the 250 just aint got it in her! At least she is trying to fire. Thanks again all of you.
Cant wait to get this thing going, I havent been on two wheels allllll year! And bike week is sooo close!

Probably Laconia (I live about ten miles away) but I will be away for most of it, heading to AZ to see my folks!

Title: Re: 87 Basket case project
Post by shovelbum87 on 06/17/13 at 15:51:30

Well I ended up getting just an AGM batt mostly because the regular LAF was special order, Three parts stores later I found one that I could have for the next day. Put her in and Thump, Thump, Thump! SHE IS ALIVE!!!! Took her out for a little ride and... wow! Its a little torquey! Loved the ride. Still need to get a front tire (incase any of you have one sitting around that is a reasonably soft compound I have a shinko on the back) Because the Cheng Shin that is on there is so far beyond hard that it doesnt handle quite the way I had hoped. Never had a bike that understeered before!.
We took her over to Laconia Bike week on friday. My boyfriends bike is currently down, we have to do a head gasket so atleast we both got there on two wheels but she was "cozy" not really the bike I would want for doubles!

Thank you all for all the help with this little project, Although she still needs some more work to be where I want it to be she runs!

Glad to hear it is up and running! I have good luck with AGM type batteries. I like that it is sealed, no acid to mess with. Does your boyfriend ride a savage as well?

Nope he has a 1984 Kawasaki GPZ750 Turbo, He has this thing for turbos, turbo bike, turbo car. I was gonna mount a hair drier on my bike so that he would like it better! Its not a bad bike, but I cant ride it cause its too tall for me. He loves that thing more than me I think. Bought it before I was born, Almost creapy but then I realize how much I would love a 36 chevy pickup! Then its all good!

Hello shovelbum.  I was interested in your comment " Never had a bike that understeered before!."  No one ever seems to mention that here but it seems that way to me.  After I ride on my old Honda CB and then jump on the Savage I tend to steer way out on the turns and it seems to take a ton of force to tighten it up.  But after riding it for about ten minutes it all seems normal again.  It will turn tight, it just takes a little practice.

If Suzuki asked my how to make it a better bike I would say reduce the rake angle and put on some better rear shocks.

Title: Re: 87 Basket case project
Post by apache snow on 06/17/13 at 18:30:26

I like the rake angle and the longer trail. Thats what makes it a cruiser.

Title: Re: 87 Basket case project
Post by shovelbum87 on 06/18/13 at 15:21:41

I have no trouble with the rake, What I mean by "understeering" is more of a push in the front end due to the cheap dry old nasty cheng shin on the front. Its just sort of sliding out from under me while trying to corner. But on the plus side, I think a new tire to match the shinko on the rear wont cost to much!

Title: Re: 87 Basket case project
Post by WD on 06/18/13 at 16:07:20

80/90 or 90/90-19 is less than $30, plus shipping. Stock 100/90 is usually around $30-35 if you stay with Shinko or Duro.  The bike does steer a touch lighter with a 90/90 than the 100/90, and the 90/90 is a better fit with the scrawny stock hoop.

Have to swap both my tires out this year. Dunlop Qualifier rear 140/90-15 (close out for $36, normal price $126) and a 90/90-19 front, brand unknown. Vintage style semi-ribbed tire. Would prefer a 130/90-15 but couldn't beat the price on the Dunlop, and no great loss when I lace the rear hub to a 16" hoop later (better tire selection in 16 than in 15).

Title: Re: 87 Basket case project
Post by shovelbum87 on 06/18/13 at 16:13:19

where do you find the 100/90 19 for $35????!!!! I found it for 60 shipped and was excited!

Title: Re: 87 Basket case project
Post by WD on 06/18/13 at 16:38:58

I shop for close out tires, pretty much exclusively. They were that low a couple months ago when I was looking. It kinda helps that I'm in the next day delivery zone for a couple major parts retailers... Look at oddball/off brands.

$60 shipped works out about right for a non-close out, non-premium tire.

If my front cheapy doesn't hold up to the roads down here, I'm going with a Dunlop 404. 44k miles in 18 months on a set of 80/90-21F and 150/80-16 rears, on a much more aggressive bike. And the tires had close to 50% tread left.

Title: Re: 87 Basket case project
Post by shovelbum87 on 06/18/13 at 16:48:56

I would rather go with a better tire but unfortunately due to the economic issues in my life I am currently doing things pretty cheap. I thought $60 isnt too bad. Besides once I have a good tire I can take the girl to work and save money on fuel costs. My truck doesnt really help in that area 100 miles a day and 19mpg ends up being around $500 a month just to get to work... if the bike gets just 30mpg and I take it half the time I could save so much money! Thats the whole reason to get this girl goin as soon as I can

Title: Re: 87 Basket case project
Post by WD on 06/18/13 at 21:44:16

19mpg? That's better than double what my 2wd fullsized Dodge pulls down, and it has a small block. My mini truck (4cyl 5spd 94 Ranger pushing 208K miles) only gets 23-26.

My Savage stone stock averaged in the high 70s mpg commuting (16 miles a day, 35-45 mph). As it is in the above pic, 36mpg average.

I just checked my mileage on a 700 mile weekend riide.  With a Wiseco 95mm piston, Stage I cam, Mikuni VM36 carb, foam Uni-Filter and custom exhaust.....I got 58 mpg.  Riding was a combiniation of fast back roads and 65mph interstate travel chasiing Old Fellow arond North Carolina and Tennessee.

I have an 03 Ranger 4X4 with the 4L  five speed it gets 19 when I drive nice, when I get some road rage goin on I get 17
So not ok!

Nice little ride. I do have to lift up the front of that seat like yall said, it will make everything better. Other than that I have not a complaint in the world. Nice little bikes!

ShovelBum87......Can I call you Bum?

You ask about the speedometer in another post.  I am not a fan of the location of the stock speedometer in the fuel tank.  I wear a full face helmet and cannot see the speedometer or indicator lights without rotating my head down and I lose sight of the road when doing so.  You could turn your speedometer hole into a cup holder and make a cup holder that slides into the plastic mount and leave the indicator lights in place........or just get rid of all that stuff and mount it elsewhere.

On my Cafe' conversion I used a TrailTech Vapor speedo/tachometer and I bought their dashboard to include the indicator lights.  Their lights are just a tad too dim to be seen in direct sunlight unless you focus on them....but they are visible and work better than the stock stuff. You may want something different than the digital look.....but is does have a lot of featurs like mph, rpm, time, odo, trip odo, resetable trip time and running time, engine temperature.....and a bogus air temperature that read 15 degrees too high.  I was freezing  my butt off on one ride and the temperature read out showed 70.....it was really about 55 degrees and damp.  I really don't need the air temp gauge anyhow.....I know when I am comfortable or miserable!

Dave, you can call me shovel, or bum or what ever I respond to almost anything, I posted in the other post that im interested in that speedo and I was curious how much it sucked to install, I really don't do well with electrical stuff, I know how it should work but I suck at it all the same. I kinda like the look of that and I rather like the price for what you get.

Shovelbum:

The hardest part of the Trailtech Vapor and dashboard is making a nice mount for it.  They make mounts for the common bikes....that is not us.  The wiring is no big deal.  The temperature gauge just does under the spark plug....or I prefer under a head stud.  The speedo drive just needs a magnet epoxied on the front hub and the sensor just two sided tapes onto the fork leg and the wire just gets taped to the front brake hose.   Both the temp gauge and speedo drive are just plug in connections.  You then need to run a hot wire and ground, and the tach need to be grounded and one wire run to the coil.  There are 4 dashboard lights and they just get wired into the places where the stock light go.....it is just splicing wires.

It is pretty easy to do.
