Title: Top end noise? Post by 00savage on 05/09/13 at 18:03:57 I recently did the verslavy mod on my bike. Since I was draining the oil anyway I switched from rotella t to t6. It seems as though i'm noticing more top end "clatter" than before. Any ideas? Check valve adjustment? |

Title: Re: Top end noise? Post by 00savage on 05/10/13 at 05:27:52 Around 9,500 miles. I'm the third owner and from the scribbles in the back of the owners manual it looks like the only maintenance the p.o.'s did was oil changes. I think it wouldn't hurt to check the valves. |

My 05 needed it every 5,000 for 15,000. At 20,000 the adjusters had been sufficiently pounded which shaped & work hardened them & they barely had changed from the 15,000 adjustment. I just sold the bike this week & will tell the new owner to check them at 25,000 ( Ill be doin that I bet), but I expect to see them well within spec. |

Title: Re: Top end noise? Post by WD on 05/10/13 at 08:03:53 5W hydrocracked "synthetic" and it is making noise... nothing surprising there, that's pretty normal. My dealer and his mechanic (both involved with FACTORY racing since the air cooled GS days) told me when I bought mine 20W summer, 15W winter, but, that's for the Gulf Coast, Long Island, etc... The Savage is a very primitive design with rather loose tolerances. Too light of oil, she's gonna make noise. 10W is too light in mine and has been since day one. Bought in Biloxi MS in February, ran the factory fill for 1200 miles (in 2 weeks) and switched it to 20W50 the next fill. She's now 15 years old, opened it up 2 weeks ago to check the cam chain and the motor innards are spotless. No sludge, no glitter, no heat discoloration... just needs a cam chain tensioner. And smaller jets, the exhaust valve stems are black and "fluffy" from an excess of toasted fuel going through them instead of burned fuel. |

Post by apache snow on 05/10/13 at 10:18:39 Don't worry about the first # 5 being too thin.... 0w, 5w, 10w, etc.is not weight but an somewhat arbitrary rating based on the oil low temperature flow and pumping characteristics - SAE J300 (1999) Motor Oil Grades- Low Temperature Specifications. I say somewhat arbitrary in that an oil that meets the 5W standard can be rated 5w or 10w because of the myth that "W" means weight ( it means winter) and 95-99% of the folks that recommend/sale/change oil believe this myth. We'll all heard "I would not use a 5 weight oil in your car.".
