Post by nateordie on 05/01/13 at 16:11:47 Hello all, I posted a topic earlier about the belt drive to chain drive.  After reading about it all, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what I can expect realistically from the savage if I were to switch to a chain drive.  Right now my change in work has me traveling about an hour and a half on the freeway round trip.  I can cruise at around 70 but everyone where I live loves to speed and so when I need to pass someone things get tricky pretty quick!  I love the bike and don't really want to get a different one unless I have to so I'm wanting to up the top speed on my savage.  What is the highest top speed I can realistically expect if I go to a chain drive and what type of chain drive would I need?  Thanks for all your help guys.

A stock Savage can't reach redine in top gear,... so raising that gearing won't gain anything... In fact,.. you may lose top speed... because the engine can't pull that gear... your top speed will then be one gear down... All it will do,.. is lower the RPM at any speed in top gear... So,.. if you're looking for a higher top speed... it is not worth changing...

You might gain 5mph...   If you really must go faster,..  I'd recommend going to a bigger bike... If you want to get 10 or 15mph more... it'll require near double the HP... You'll need a bigger bike for that... say 45 to 50Hp...

If you correspondingly, increase breathing, fuel, and compression, and add a cam... you might tickle 50hp... ... but, you'll have an overstressed engine that will probably self destruct in short order... You don't want to spend $1000 to make a Savage hand grenade... A nice 650 horizontal or vertical twin will put out 45 to 50hp and do 100 to 110 mph.. A 500 Ninja, will do 120mph... A Savage will top out at 85 or 90mph... PS... I don't mean to shoot you down...  I'm just saying that this bike isn't really designed to do what you want... Many other bikes are, and can do it easily, without strain...

Many other bikes are, and can do it easily, without strain... My stock purple S40 with just a muffler and carb rejet will routinely hit 95-100 indicated.  Changing the carburetor, a modest cam, bump to 10.5:1 CR with a better piston, ported head, and a good flowing header/muffler makes a good bit more power; and without over stressing the engine.  Keep in mind that the 90-95 DR650's produced a declared 46 hp and the only significant difference between it and the Savage was the better designed exhaust ports, dual plugs and a much higher lift camshaft....higher lift than any of the cam profiles I have done by Webcam, and the DR cam profile was factory stock.

I am following some of Lancers upgrades, e.g.Oversized high compression piston, ported head at this stage. Is there anyone out there that has done these upgrades? and still have a fully functional bike? Serowbot you got me worried. :-/
