Title: Disaster with Carb
Post by SteveBless on 04/29/13 at 10:10:06

I was trying to get out the broken stud with an easy out and then it went CRACK!! :(
Any suggestions?. Or any Carb bodies going cheap?.
I am in the UK.
I can still get the new allen head bolt in there and it seems tightish. But not sure about the crack. I don't think it is a crucial place.

Oooh, nasty...

I think JBWeld might interfere with the seal up there, unless you go on real thin, and then it will probably flake off...
So,.. I'd try seeping some Super Glue in the crack... then, put a washer and nut on what's left of that screw hole...
JMHO... Nuttin' to loose tryin' it... If it holds,.. that's not a place you get into often, so you might be okay...
:-?...

a sad case, a guy... :(
the crack inside the carburetor can be repaired by http://tdrusoil.ru/components/com_virtuemart/shop_image/product/01626.jpg. but instead of a threaded part of better make(if there is such a possibility) adapter. but unfortunately, all this will be a temporary measure .

I would lay it flat on a piece of paper.....and fill up the missing corner with an epoxy like JB weld and let it set up.  then file and grind it to shape.  Then drill and tap the hole.  If you don't have a tap....the drill the hole and install a nut on the other side.  And fill the crack as Serobot said....with a gel super glue or some RTV silicone.

I don't know what you have in the UK that is like JB weld......which is a very durable and hard epoxy.

IF that crack stops before it goes down in that hole, I think it'll save.
Go look at Cam Journal REpair with JB weld. Digger just posted a link to some "Better than JB Weld" stuff, or, at least reading about it makes me think it is,

I like to drill a small hole at the end of a crack, so vibration wont make it grow.
The slide is raised by the vacuum above  & the diaphragm must be supported & sealed at the top. That crack has to go. But, as long as the hole the slide runs in isnt distorted & you seal everything up, I think that thing will save. You can build a support for the epoxy, drill & tap & Ohh so carefully reshape the tab you broke.
Little parts like that need to be supported if youre gonna get rough with it.

Thanks for the replies so far. We have JB Weld here. So I will try that first. I will also go with the nut on the other side. I will post pics when done. It will be a couple of days though. The crack I will fill with super Glue I think. Thanks again guys.

Well here is the JB Weld on the carb. :)

Here is another taken from the underside. I had to keep the carb turning in my hand for over 2 hours until the JB Weld was hard enough not to run. It is very runny when put on so thick.

Here is the carb finished and re-tapped.

And another. Sorry I am not too sure how to post multiple pics on here.
Thanks for all your help guys. The bike started up no problem, and you cannot see the part of the carb I have repaired.

You did great !
I'd bet you would never find a place uptown that would even attempt to do a repair like that,......even at any price.
