When I shut my bike off I get a pretty loud backfire. Any suggestions?

Its a nice "feature" I tell ya. Thanks for the advice Charon. I will have to add earplugs to my motorcycle attire. ;D

Blacklabel Seros links are THE place to start BEFORE you do anything else. Well,maybe the first thing is to make sure your idle is set to about 1000 rpm so your top end is getting properly lubed.

When these scoots are running right you should get a "woosh" and a short blue flame at shut-down.  Anything louder calls for deeper study and proper adjustments.

other quick tips that I have found work for me:

Make sure the exhaust bolts are tight. They let in fresh air (O2), which then allows for more POP.

When shutting down a warm engine: first pull out the "choke" usually half way.. this will reduce the RPMs.. but only for a second or two. As the RPMS fall use the kill switch to actually kill the engine. Basically the normal high ( 1000) idle rpm of the engine tends to aggravate this problem.

Do NOT turn down the idle! The engine needs that speed to properly oil itself.

I have been riding my Savage since 1999 - how many times I have responded to this I cannot imagine.

The bang is from unburned gasoline pumping through your engine when the key is switched off an igniting on a hot spot - likely a peice of red hot carbon in the exhaust syste.

There is a carburator needlle trick that wi60 mph ll basically cure this but therre is also a riding style solution.

First - take your bike out for a good steady highway speed ride - 10 miles at 60 mph will do it - that will help clear all the extra carbon out of the exhaust
The next part requires modifying your riding style a bit. When you are riding and using engine braking - make sure you close the throttle completely all the time. Again the objective is to keep those unburned gasses out of the hot muffler.  Finally don't come home from a ride and leave the engine idling - a few seconds are okay but don't let it cool while running.
You will not totally eliminate the backfire but you can reduce it to a mild woof!
