Title: Tire Shopping
Post by savagerider87 on 04/24/13 at 09:35:51

I am shopping around for a new front tire, and was wondering what was a good all around tire for rain, durability, ride comfort, and price.  Any suggestions?

Perilli Route 66.

Anything other than IRC. From sub-generics (Shinko) all the way through premium brands. I'm partial to D404 Dunlops, have had great success with them on other bikes in the past, but, they seem to wear quickly on a Savage based on forum reports.

If you plan to ride a bunch in the wet, stay away from ribbed tires, Avon Speedmaster and its various clones. Atrocious wet weather handling.

Shiinko 712's... Kenda Kruz,.. Dunlop 404,... Perilli 66,...  Metzler...
Pay for how many miles you ride per year...
2 to 3k or less,.. buy cheaper,... 6 to 10k per year,.. buy the Metzlers...
You want to wear it out,.. before it drys out... 4 to 6 years...

Buy one that appeals to you... Looks matter, too...

I agree. Buy depending on how many miles you ride per year. I have Metzler tires on my S40 and the rear tire has 15,000 miles on it and still has a few thousand left.

I won't use Dunlop 404 tires ever again. Had a Dunlop on my V Star 1100 and it lasted about as long as the stock IRC tire on the S40 did. The Dunlop was a slick at 8000 miles.

I'm just about ready to put new skins on the Savage. I've used the Kenda "Kruz" on my KZ440 Kawasaki with good results, good traction, great handling on wet roads(including 50 miles in a 4-5" per hour thunderstorm!)and long life(10,000 miles of hard riding twisty Kentucky roads). I'll be putting a set of the Kruz on the Savage and see how they do on it but for the money(best price from Motorcycle Superstore)I feel they are the best buy.

We run Kendas on Lisa's 800 Intruder. She likes them.

My VN800A had 40K miles on a set of D404 and they still had lots of tread left. The 1500 Drifter killed a set in under 6K miles. Southern roads are hard on tires...

I just put Metzler 888's on my V Star 1100 and will see how they compare to the 880 on my S40. Weight of the bike makes a difference along with road surfaces on tread life. It won't surprise me if I get 18,000+ out of the 880 on the S40.
