Title: Will a Suzuki GT550 petcock work?
Post by thomasoconnor19 on 04/23/13 at 20:46:48

I am putting a GT550 tank on my 650 and am wondering if I will run into any problems running a GT550 petcock?

Is it vacuum operated?
How does the tank fit? Will it clear the frame? YOu realize youre asking a question w/o much chance anyones really gonna have the absoolute answer, right?
It otta at least fit the tank,,

As long as it clears the frame.  The petcock doesn't know or care if its attached to Savage or a John Deere.

Yup it clears the frame/engine. Figured it would work on anything. Going to pickup a rebuild lot for it.

Because I've mounted a gt550 tank on my bike. Guess I should have asked about the petcock before I mounted it!

Man, if the gt550 mount is the same as the savage, get the Raptor petcock & save $$ & future hassles.

What's the procedure for mounting that GT550 tank?

Nope....The bolt hole spacing on the Raptor is narrower than the GT550 tank.

The stock GT550 petcock is a vacuum operated one......for a 2 cycle engine.  Not sure if the engine vacuum is the same on both bikes, but I guess it should be similar as they both use carbs.......

(PS.....If you want another one for spares......email me and I will give you mine).

Is yours in good shape? I was planning to buy a rebuild kit - but would take yours if its in good shape? I cleaned mine up and I'm not sure how great of condition it is in.

I have no idea what is inside it......other than 30+ year old rubber parts!  Even if you did get it to work.....I doubt if I would use it for long without installing new parts.  You might be able to clean it up and get it to work.....but as the rubber ages it gets hard  and cracks and fails to seal well.

Anyone else seen a different petcock install ok on the LS650?

Very easy actually. Chopped off the two posts/rubber puck mounts and welded them to the frame in the proper spot. Then I cut off the bracket from the stock tank and welded it to the gt550 tank. I can take some pics?

That's about the general procedure for mounting any non-LS tank. I think people thought you didn't need to do any welding. Not sure anyone has found a tank that fits on the pucks in the stock location.

I'll snap post pics this week before I have the tank cleaned.
Been holding off because I'm just trying to make sure that this thing will run with the gt550 petcock.
