Title: Gas tank petcock Post by Rocket on 04/22/13 at 06:33:28 Have a Ryca Cafe, buildt from a 1997. The standard Savage petcock is installed in the convenional manner under the tank. I did some engine work this winter, and on reinstalling the tank then petcock (the petcock has to come off to remove the tank for clearance) I found the petcock leaking, apparently down the forward mounting screw. I immediately thought that is was just a tired oval o-ring (mine was original), and have ordered a new one. But on examining the petcock assembly, I note that the two mounting screws are located inside of the oval o-ring rather than outside it, so I wonder if the screws need to be gasoline impermeable as well. Looking at my two mounting screws one has a bit of stripped threads mid-way up the shaft. I can easly clean up these threads, but if the screws need to be part of the seal to prevent leakage, maybe it is better to replace the screws too? Or apply some type of sealant? Anyone had issues in this area? Your imput appreciated. |

Title: Re: Gas tank petcock Post by Rocket on 04/22/13 at 07:22:17 H-m-m...I don't recall seeing them when I disassembled in the fall, but if they are stock, I can surely order them. Thanks. |
Title: Re: Gas tank petcock Post by savagerider87 on 04/22/13 at 07:49:00 I had this problem just the other day, just use some Permatex #1 form a gasket sealant( it is gasoline resistant) on the mounting flange and a little on the screw threads, bolt it up after a half hour or so and let it cure overnight.... It worked for me :) |
Title: Re: Gas tank petcock Post by Rocket on 04/22/13 at 07:57:41 Thanks, I think I'll do both. A leak is a pain because it is hard to get all the gas out of the tank without making mess. |

Title: Re: Gas tank petcock Post by justin_o_guy2 on 04/22/13 at 09:31:18 I never had a problem draining the tank. REserve does a fine job. |

Well since you have the Raptor on it, Take the tank off then get a funnel on your gas can and pull the gas cap and dump it in your can, quick, easy and no mess. R.F. |

Title: Re: Gas tank petcock Post by Dave on 04/23/13 at 04:54:01 I think the OP can turn the petcock on Prime and drain almost all the gas out......but when you loosen the screws you get the gas dribble from that few ounces that won't drain. If you have a garage attached to the house....a little gas goes a long way and can make the wife unhappy. |
