Title: A Jack for the S40
Post by johnnyyuma on 04/16/13 at 18:37:58

Anyone know of a jack that will lift the standard S40 (mine is the 2009 version)?  Specifically the Sears Craftsman or the Harbor Freight Jack?

Forget a jack, make a Serowstand!

Yeah, I am aware of the homemade version, I was interested in whether anyone had any experiences with the commercial variety....

I have the sears craftsman red version, but you have to put about 3/4" block under the rear left side because its not even there. I will try to get the setup and take a pic tommorrow.

I have the Harbor Freight yellow jack. It works fine, but make sure to use a strap. I found a coupon online for $70.

Appreciate the reply Borracho, and Old_Rider if you can send/post a picture that would be great.

Same experience here, the Harbor Freight works fine for the Savage/S40.

The bottom of the Savage is not flat, and any jack will lift the bike crooked unless you use something to shim the fame while lifting.

In this thread at posting #325 you can see what Gyrobob did to make his jack work better.

My understanding is that Bob's modification was for his RYCA Savage, which seems to have a different lower profile than the unmodified Savage, hence the need for template he made to lift his RYCA version.

The RYCA conversion does have a bit of a lumpier bottom that the stock bike - but even the stock one is lumpy underneath.  The bottom of the engine sticks down just a bit lower than the frame, and the exhaust header does also.  Whenever I would jack up my stock bike it would lean no matter where I placed the jack - and I had a couple of wood shims I placed under the frame to level it out.  (I have the Yellow Craftsman lift).

So no matter what jack you have, you will have to do some kind shimming, etc., as the bottom of the Savage is not flat enough to lift without it leaning.  Thank you all for the information, gentlemen.

I purchased a regular floor jack from Harbor Freight. I put a piece of shelving type wood between the jack and the frame to catch both sides equally. It works very well for me. I also picked up a stand that holds the bike up when working on it.

Hey, does that bike stand pick up the front or rear or both?

I also have the Harbor Freight jack and have not have any issues with it. It is a heavy SOB though.

It doesn't life. It is more of a wheel chock. But it works for both. It makes life much easier.

I've used the Harbor Freight bike lift without having to use shims and it seems to pick the bike up level enough for me. I've never had any issues.

What year is your bike, 12Bravo?

The motorcycle jack I bought at Sears (the aluminum version) works really well.  While the bottom of a stock Savage is pretty lumpy, you can wiggle the jack around well enough to have the bike supported adequately (when strapped tightly to the jack) to have both wheels a foot off the floor so you can actually reach most of the bike to work on it.

As Dave says, the RYCA version is a LOT more lumpy, so that adapter (with holes and cut-outs for the lumps) makes things a lot steadier.  It took a few hours of jacking, fitting, routing, and band-sawing, but it is fairly helpful.
