Title: 38 mpg is this right?
Post by 45acp on 04/15/13 at 20:07:07

im riding a 2004 savage with a little over 16k. the previous owner put a harley muffler on it and said he rejetted the carb. the bike seems to run okay. yesterday i rode about 138 miles. i checked my gas mileage and only got 38 mpg. is that about average or do i need to start looking for a problem?

If you want to see what some others report for fuel mileage, try www.fuelly.com. On its left is a "browse vehicles" and when that opens you can browse motorcycles. Then you can find Suzuki, and the model. Personally, I think it ought to be getting at least 50 mpg, but carburetor jettings and driving habits have a strong influence on mpg.

You can click on the fuelly badge in my signature block, and wander around from there, too.

If you did your math right,... you're drooling fuel...
A Savage can't burn that much... :-?...

I average about 36mpg, but the vast majority of that gas is spent to and from work.  5 miles, 4 stop lights, 6 stop signs.  The best I've seen was around 55mpg, all highway miles.

I'd say that 75% of my rides are at 75 - 80 MPH on freeways.  The rest of the time I'm probably averaging 45 MPH on surface streets with long spans between lights and stop signs.

With that type of riding, I'm averaging 63 MPG.  My bike's a 2011 S40 and is completely stock.  I'm keeping it stock for the time being because I love high MPG.  My 2007 Chevy Silverado, on the other hand,  gets only 1/3 the MPG as the Suzi, of course.

I avg about 44 to 45 mph most times, but I know I'm rich in the mid range on my tuning,  when I was fine tuning my setup I lost one of the washers that was sent in the kit from Lancer and that made me abit to rich in the mid range which is where you are in most cruise and highway riding.  I'll just deal with it for now until I get the upgrade carb from Lancer in the next few months, then I'll get her tuned properly.  Plus I'll be doing a chain conversion with a 17/43 which should help with my mileage as well since most of it's at 70 mph around here in the country to get anywhere as it's all hwy and a min of 20 to 30 miles to the nearest real store.

I am getting 60 mpg with about 1/2 in town and 1/2 running 55.

I have a stock muffler, a K&N drop in filter, 147.5 main, 55 pilot with the screw turned out 1 & 3/4 turns, and I raised the needle up .030. I am at around 500 sea level.

I tried to keep the stock 52.5 pilot but it was just too lean. I wonder if the 52.5 pilot with the bleed holes would be better.

The bleed holes don't do anything on our carbs.  The bleed holes operate on carbs that have an "air screw" to adjust idle air iinstead of idle fuel.  I have tried both with and without bleed holes on my carb, and with an O2 sensor in my exhaust so I could read the difference, and there is none.  On our carbs the only metering is through the size of the small hole at the tapered end of the jet.......the bleed holes don't do a thing as they are surrounded by the aluminum carb body and there is nothing that can flow into or out of those bleed holes.

On the third page of the following link - there is a diagram that shows how the pilot jet has both fuel flowing in the bottom, and air from the air bleed screw is mixed through in the Pilot Jet.  There is also a description of this on the section that talks about the low speed operation in Section 3.1.

My overall average fuel economy on my 05 has worked out to be 41.9mpg. Most of my travel is short in town rides, I think it's a little rich with my setup (147.5 main/55 pilot) running a Memphis Slim w/s and Fishtail muffler with little baffling.

Here's a screenshot from my phone of each time I've filled up since last summer (Makes me think I need to ride more often)

i realized today that i havent changed the air filter since i have owned the bike. i went ahead and ordered one. maybe that will help a little on the mpg. it did on my old 79 f150. :D

My Savage got 4x better fuel economy than my truck (318 V8 with 3 speed slushomatic) the last several times it was ridden... 36mpg with 15 inch rise apes.

Stone stock it was turning in mid 70s mpg commuting, 35-45 mph country roads.

i guess ill just keep tinkering with it. there is no telling what the previous owner really did.  :)

Don't even think ya can't get 35 mpg !
My bike runs beeeeeeautiful, and I did get 50 mpg once, only because I really tried, and it was boring and not  fun. Most times I get 35 - 40.
My bro in Grand Rapids said my bike can't be running right, because he gets 50 all the time.
Then last year he hauled his s40 w/ him on his trip out here. We took several rides together. Long story short,....... even tho he couldn't stay w/ me, he learned what riding really is. Afterward he said he was surprised we even got 35 mpg. There ain't a straight level spot in this country. And its WOT out of every curve. Its what riding is all about here ! MPG means nothing.

he's not asking about the brake lever/arm, he's asking about the hub itself in the area that the brake shoes would drag against it. If's it's starting to turn any color other then normal aluminum your brakes are dragging, if it's gotten to a bronze like color they are dragging very bad.

i was talking about burning to much fuel. my brakes are okay. ;) i think ill dial it in a little and see if that fixes it. im not getting alot of smoke or anything. i just dont think it should turn everything behind my muffler black. i did notice today when i went to start adjusting my valves that the previous owner took the vac line off the petcock. he plugged the port on the carb by wrapping the drain line around from the bottom and hooking it up to the port. ::)
bonus the petcock never shuts off.... the bonus is getting to do the raptor mod. ;)

Post by 45acp on 04/21/13 at 19:40:15

well i just thought i should post this. i should have caught it earlier, but didnt until i took the tank off for the first time. the petcock vac line wasnt plugged. the previous owner pulled it off the petcock. left it attached to the carb. then he just let it hang there. i always assumed it was a drain of some sort. :-[  plugged it off and the bike idles much better now. im willing to bet it makes a big difference gas wise also.

on another note i pulled out the stock petcock. the filter screen is gone. i guess he did away with it too.  ::)
