Title: My bike is running smoother on reserve.
Post by glencross96 on 04/15/13 at 17:38:39

So I bought my 2000 Suzuki Savage a few weeks ago. I can't drive on the streets yet so my dad's been teaching me how to ride up in a secluded area. Anyways, I have only ridden it 3 times for a few hours each time, and yesterday it started running odd. Well I ran it out of gas, which was fine, I just switched over to reserve. But when I was on reserve it ran alot smoother than on the normal setting. Maybe because it was low on gas the whole time since I didn't ride much? Or could it be this petcock problem I've been reading about?

On and Reserve are both vacuum operated... so, it shouldn't make any difference...
It may be that you were stumbling on sloshed gas for while, and when you switched, it seemed better...
Fill up,.. and run a few tanks... ;)...

That's good news! I was hoping it was the gas! I don't get to ride til next Friday but I'll know soon enough! Thank you!

pushing the lever forward is reserve
pulling the lever back is prime

which did you do?

If pushed forward, you have a hardening diaphragm, may not completely fail for another year.  My bike had the same symptom.

Another thing that occurred to me is that both feeds have a little filter sock on them.  It could be that your main sock is gunked up, and the reserve is cleaner from less use...

I pushed forward to reserve. And I will check the feed filter things. Thanks. Question though. I can't tell if I'm running lean or rich. When at idle I can smell gas fumes which is a sign of rich. But I get backfiring when rolling off the throttle.
