Heres a link to an educational read on lead acid batteries,.....answers some questions, including the age old question,...why one battery lasts only 1 year, and another lasts 6 - 10 yrs.

Good information. It explains how I've killed so many batteries in my lifetime. Worth a read.

Yep, but it wasn't all of our fault. Some of the blame lies w/ the Quappy (I just love that handle) chargers that we were forced to use.
I mean, it was hard to win in those days,.....either we killed them from not charging, or we killed them w/ the Quappy chargers that would fry them dry in a short time !

I always knew that discharging lead-acid batteries ruined them and I heard some rumours of "fingers" or "hairs" on the plates that caused it but up until this thread I didn't know the actual science behind it. Thanks for the info.

In handling the acid in the shop, it should always be kept in its glass bottle, and should be poured only into a glass, porcelain, earthenware, lead, or rubber vessel. Never use a vessel made of any other material.

Im pretty sure the container that I last got with a battery was plastic.

Great information.

My uncle has a Booster Charger with a timer....and he has always charged his vintage cars that in storage on the high setting. I new it was wrong....I finally have something in writing I can give him that explains why.
