Title: It's The Little Things That Make Riding Enjoyable
Post by Dane Allen on 04/10/13 at 08:34:41

I've been meaning to post this since I started riding the new S40. One of the things that really strike me when riding is all the different smells along the way. Not always good smells, and I still check the engine when I smell something burning or too-rish exhaust but I love the smell of kerocene at the airport and I pass at least two bakeries and that is great in the morning. Cut grass seems to be funneled into my helmet vents and Oleander and Orange blossoms are everywhere down here.

I don't get 90% of that in the car and it is interesting how much of a added bonus the smells along the route are to the ride. I actually think about what I'm missing when I drive the same route now, at one point in the drive I will recall that " oh, yeah, there is a bakery around here somewhere" or when I pass the airport I miss the thunder of the engines and the smell of jet fuel.

Rode to work this A.M. and it was a very enjoyable ride  ;)

Skunk!...
In a car,.. you'll catch the smell,  after you pass the skunk...
On a bike,... you smell it coming...  I always start scanning the road...

The other thing,... is heat pockets... you never notice them in a car,... or even on foot... but, on a bike, you feel these sudden pockets of temperature change...
Motorcycling is a unique experience....

I wish I found heat pockets during my winter riding. All I found was colder pockets.  :o

this.. and I love it...

be ridding along and his low spot (generally there will be a bridge or culvert) and you get that prikley sensation when the cold air strikes.

Smells:
the bakery
the fried chiken spot
the gas station come BBQ place where they are actually smoking the meat
onions when they come out
different bushes/small trees .. I dont keep up with the names
diesel truck on a cold morn

The farmers are spreading liquid manure around here so I try not to smell, it's the same in a car or a bike, no escaping it and it drifts for a mile or more.

My first ride, a '64 Honda CA110, in late 1964, in Detroit.  Riding home, about midnight, past the Stroh Brewery ... ahhhh!!

The guy spraying round-up to kill the weeds on the sidewalk as I rode by! I could taste it :( Should have moved over but I was in the right turn lane. Other than that you are spot on!

sometimes its the little things that make riding hurt. like the little rock that kicked off the semi tire as i met him doing 65mph. my shin still hurts.  :o

Hit a bee driving through the wood last year, got in my shirt, boy he was angry. Got stung 5 times before I pulled over, got home nice and swollen :)

Riding through the spray from the end gun on a center pivot irrigation system.

BIG grasshoppers that jump up just as you get to them. When one of those hits you on the shin you take notice.

In town, yard sprinklers that sometimes water the road.

"These are a few of my favorite things."

I think someone kid a turkey call on my bikes. It doesn't matter if I'm on the S40 or my V Star, I seem to attract turkeys to me. Had one fly over so close that the windshield was between the birds legs. I've learned that YES you can ride a motorcycle side-saddle thru a curve  :o

Funny random fact about the jet fuel odors, one of my friends used to work in an airport, and he had a pile of stickers that said:  I LOVE THE SMELL OF JET FUEL IN THE MORNING, you should get one lol !

The smells,, I LOVE the smells. OUt in the country, in the late afternoon, just before the sun is in that "sunset" time, things have been heated up & have been giving off all their "Im here, come pollinate me" stuff. Dropping down toward a bridge, where the cooler air is settling, the scents are more densely packed,, so many tasty smelling plants I cant separate them. The smell of a pasture  or hay thats been cut,, dang, those things make riding something that cant be had any other way. I GUess, anyway,,, Is it like that in a convertible?

I love riding through the country side when the farmers are cutting hay, or through a neighborhood when grass is being mown.  I also love riding along the river on a hot day as the cool air comes off the water.  My favorite, though, is carving through mountain roads in the early morning when the pine trees are most fragrant!

I enjoy a nice countryside ride. No traffic, just the nice
fresh air.
Sunshine bright, warm and no big hurry to be anywhere.
No timeclock to be punched.
Just me and my Genie and our shadows... :) kim

I wish! Up here in Maine it's cold pockets. Riding along enjoying the sun, then hit a shaded patch of woods...Brrrrr. On the bright side it is usually not too uncomfortable with a riding jacket on.

There is a road down here that winds between a commercial nursery.  On hot days, when they are watering, the temperature will drop a few degrees, and it will smell like fresh rain.

When I'm in my van and I have to fart, I lean to one side.  On my bike, I stand up to fart so I don't tip over.   Sometimes my woman is a passenger and she knows what is about to happen when I stand up.   ;D  Being out in the air, you only smell it for a second or two.  This is one of the little things that makes riding enjoyable!   :)

Watching one of the other riders in the group take a coastal dragonfly between the eyes... and then you get hit the same way with a June Bug...  ::)

Playing dodge 'em with emus and ostriches that went over the fence and are hiding in the ditch... actually pretty fun. Used to be a bunch of bird farms around here.

The smells of the neighbors' stills, pot fields or meth labs...  More a western WA thing than it is down here...  :-/

New Orleans after a spring storm, in the Garden District... jasmine, hibiscus, lilies, banana plants... and a seafood boil.  8-)

Good post Dane! I think the gang has hit all the high(and low)points. My commute is 40 miles one way through the Bluegrass region of Kentucky so I relate to the horses, hayfields, freshly plowed ground, skunks, manure wagons and the other "country" smells, but I also go past a major landfill.......can you say rotting garbage? My trip also takes me past two truck stops,so I get full benefit of the diesel fumes on cool mornings.

The main point is that those of us out there on two wheels are truly in touch with our surroundings! We see, smell and feel the world around us,unlike the poor folks trapped in their rolling parlors, equipped with climate control, six way powered and heated seats, quadrophonic surround-sound stereo and everything else they throw on cages today. No wonder the kids are so messed up!
