Title: Front pulley cover
Post by Doody814 on 04/05/13 at 11:12:01

I've never been fond of the looks of the pulley cover, especially now that I'm doing a bobber project.  It's kinda large and chunky looking, and I want something smaller, and more custom looking, preferably something that shows more of the pulley itself, while still maintaining some protection to the pulley & belt.  I've seen some guys just remove them completely, but I'm not keen on that idea at all.

I can't find anything aftermarket, custom, or otherwise.  I came across a nice looking homemade one, while browsing a few days ago, that someone on here posted, but I can't find the thread again anywhere.  Does anyone know of any options that might be out there?

The member that was making them has been kinda AWOL for awhile. Don't think anyone has heard from him in months.

I'm not setup to do any sheet metal work like he was, or I would try to do something like that.  Now if I was setup for casting aluminum I could come up with some unique stuff as well, but I know nothing about casting aluminum or any type of metals for that fact.

I am going to do something like this to my rear brake.  You could adapt this style to the pulley cover as well.

I did, as well as this one, but both still use the stock shape & slotted openings.  I do like them both, but I was wanting something that didn't look anything like what the stock one started out as.

Yep, that's the one!  I love how he incorporated the lines on the mating side, and matching diameters of the pulley, so it looks like it's "factory made", but still far from "stock".

I don't love everything about it, but this is definitely an interesting angle to take...

You might note that this is not a cover, but a prelude to a disc brake mounted to the pulley.  The stator cover was modified to fit as well.

Yeah, that's what I don't like about it...I can just see my left pant leg getting pulled off the first time I rode it like that. :o

I do like the overall look of it though, with the two tandem circles, and the openness of it.  If it was mounted using the current bolt holes rather than to the pulley, the pulley spinning behind it would look pretty spiffy.

Doody, I really like the red pulleys and the red disk brake hub.  I seriously thought about painting mine like that.

I also like the the cover with the random holes in it.

Nice touches all of them.

bobert, Yeah I really do to.  I've got red rims, so I'm wanting to do the pulley red to accent them.  That's really the main reason I want a cover that is more open...but I want something that is more unique.

If you want, I could look into making a cover.
Only I couldn't bend over the top like skeebo did.
It would just be a flat plate.

Could the stock cover be modded with a flat plate to give a similar look to the one our AWOL friend made?

I had another thought.  Could the factory face plate be machined?  Radius the lower edge, add a large half circle under the two slots?

I just didn't  like the angularity of the back end of the plate...
So,.. I rounded the back end... for a bit softer line... :-/...

That does look better.   agreed the angular shape looks out of place for those of us who have removed the belt guard.  Did you just use a table grinder?

Nupe... just a hacksaw, file, and sandpaper... (only took about 5 min. plus a couple minutes for r & r...)... ;)...

I would be very interested in cover options  :)

Serowbot, just noticed the unique front pegs you are running.  What's the story behind those?

Well, here is what I ended up with...Probably would benefit from a little fine tune sanding of the edges, but I was in a hurry to get it completed before the weekend.  The daughter had a birthday party, so my weekend was spent cooking weenies and listening to a dozen girls scream Beiber songs!

Nothing wrong with that at all. Much cleaner looking than the factory part. Bolted on from the inside, covered with little vacuum caps?

I need to do something about mine, looks terrible. And find somebody with a louver punch to mod the upper belt guard, some kind of boring, AND I loathe chrome, so it needs to be sanded and painted...  :-/

Yep, that exactly what I did.  I probably would've preferred the expanded metal to have been welded in place, but I'm a bit lacking in the TIG dept.  I figured this way, if I don't like the look, I can always switch out the caps for something else...that was before I used copious amounts of red lock-tite...I guess that's why they make power tools :D

Think rivets would've been a better choice.

Nice though.

at the sound of girls scream beeper songs... just shoot me.

I think your finished product looks pretty good!  8-)

It's too bad Skeebo went MIA.  He made some really cool stuff.  I had ordered a fake oil tank/battery box right before he disappeared and stopped answering e-mail and PM.  :'(
