I was doing some rim painting this weekend on the Bobber project (will post pics soon), and now that it is back together, I have no front brake.

All I did was take off the caliper...it was a bit snug going back on, so I used a screwdriver to pry the pads apart a bit. I remounted it, and reattached the perch onto the handlebars, which I had also removed.

I figured that I could just pump them a few times and they would tighten back up, but nothing...Any ideas?

Did you remove the hose from the caliper or the master cylinder?

Nope, everything was left intact, and dangling from the forks.

& you didnt lose fluid? Sure doesnt seem to be playing fair,,

YOu just pried the thing open so it would slip off the rotor, unbolted the caliper & pulled the master cylinder/brake lever off the H/bars & let it all hang there?
I cant see where ya went wrong, but Id start by just cracking the bleeder ( put a hose on it, into a jar) & keeping the M?C full O fluid. It otta just gravity drain. If not, a vacuum on the bleeder drain tube would help, or, least fun, pump the brake/open & close bleeder..

check you got the disc between the pads.
did you take the wheel off? check the spacers, the one with a flange and a dust cover goes on the brake side.

If you use a screw driver to pry the pads apart it is possible to jam the piston in the bore, because you might put pressure on one side of the piston and cause it to go in at an angle, jamming it up.
Don't ask me how I learned THAT lesson. :-[

Yea, I learned to always unscrew the bleeder too, although it's messy it's easier than f...ing with up the piston.

Crack? How you mean? I understand on a car, with a heavy caliper, but the caliper on these things weighs about nothin,,

A 10-15 year old bike has brake hoses about as soft and flexible as dry biscuit dough. If they stay in the configuration (shape) they've been sitting in for that amount of time, they'll be okay maybe,.. but twist them or pull them into a different shape for an hour or day or week??

So, I roll her out last night, squeeze the lever, and...wait for it...she came to a lunging stop! It still feels a tiny bit mushy still though, so I'm pretty sure it still needs bleeding. Probably had a bubble, and it worked it's way up to the resevior.

Seems to be working now...thanks for everyone's comments!

So are the big comfy grips you installed limiting the travel of the brake lever?

They don't seem to be. I actually had the throttle side installed on the old bars, before the issue appeared, and it didn't stop any less than it did with the original grip.
