Title: Looking for another S40, probably...
Post by Buster on 03/24/13 at 06:51:54

Sold my '11 S40 way too soon and got a street legal "dirt" bike with intentions of riding to work some, but mainly using for playing in the dirt on the weekends. About a week after geting the new bike, my buddies traded their old dual-sports in on Honda and Yamaha cruisers. Finally sold my dirt bike and trying to find a good deal on a S40 in my area, but can't find nearly the selection around where I live as compared to when I bought my S40. And they're pretty much asking full list price now, unlike the $1,000-$1,200 discounts that I found just about a year ago. Did find a 2011 S40 with only 1,100 miles on it for $3,600 but it's about a 2 hour drive to look at it.

Finally, to my real question: If the "best deal" I can find during the next few weeks would be full MSRP on the S40, would you go ahead and get that, or consider spending a bit more and order a Royal Enfield from the local Triumph/Enfield dealer? The S40 and Enfield are really my only two choices, because of their engines and light weight. Like the styling of the Enfield, but not sure how the reliability is compared to the Suzuki. Thank you in advance for your opinions.

Timing is everything, and yours is not in your favor. Spring/summer inventory gets low and prices rise accordingly as this is after all the time to ride. Suzuki has been offering a 0% financing, not sure if they still do. If you can afford a new bike, then call all the dealers within the distance you are willing to travel and get there best price. But remember you might not get the same willing service from the local dealer when time arrives to service it....but you can do your own if you document it and still keep your warranty in tact.
With a used bike you do run the risk of wasting a lot of time and money trying to snake out that good deal.
You have a lot of variables to consider, weigh them, then go get the bike, as its time to ride.....GOOD LUCK!

Try haggling. Find out the dealer cost and offer 5% over that, and if they refuse, (and they probably will) offer 8%, if refused, walk. Do this just before the end of the month. This is because the dealer wants his month-end to look as good as possible, and the commissioned sales person really wants the commission, as Jan and Feb have been low sales months.
You have nothing to loose trying.
I once bought a new Toyota Four-runner at 5% over dealer cost.
The last thing any commissioned sales person wants to see is your back as you walk out the door.

Buster I absolutely love the RE's, I especially have a soft spot for them after living in India. But be advised even with the UCE's you will spend more time wrenching and doing maintenance then with the LS650, not a bad thing just something to take into consideration  ;)

That same $2500 will get you a 2007 with (approximately) 12,600 on it, box stock, and Viper windshield. I'm in Nebraska.

Dealer cost is easy to get for a cage, but does anyone know where to find same for a motorcycle?

TIA!

In 1973 a Yamaha dealer I had worked for when he was getting started sold me a new RD350 for $857, which was his cost +10%. List back then was $1299, so that would make it 60%. Don't know what it would be now, 40 (crap, how did that happen) years later.

Guess that doesn't help much, huh? 8-)

Most of the dealerships I have talked with seem to start with MSRP, add a couple of hundred for shipping, another couple of hundred for setup, another hundred or so for documentation fees, and maybe more if they can think of some excuse. They might drop a hundred off, somewhere, if you press them. Seems to me you end up with MSRP plus anywhere from five to seven hundred dollars. That doesn't include taxes and registration fees. At least on those websites which list prices for used machines, they seem to run at least a thousand dollars over whatever NADA or KBB retail prices run, plus the hundred or more for documentation fees. Funny enough, if you talk with them about trading a bike, they seem to run several hundred dollars less then NADA or KBB trade-in values. But, when a person tries to sell a bike at NADA retail, or even a little less, nobody seems interested.

Toe Knows... ;D... and I agree...

Geez,.. Buster,.. are your friends screwin' whitcha", or what?...

Yunno' what?... if followin' don't work out... lead..
Ride yer' own ride... let them figure out what bike they need to keep up...
If my buddies want to ride on a Savage inappropriate ride... I just don't go...
They want me to come along,.. they know what rides my Savage likes...
This way,.. I can back out of rides I don't care for,.. and they can exclude me from rides if they want to, without offense...
win, win...

PS,.. I think RE's are lovely machines... but I wouldn't buy one... (they need to step up a bit, to get to Jap standards)... (and they can,... Triumph did it,.. Guzzi doin' good, too)... RE will get there...just not yet...

I have never owned an unrealiable bike....but a long time ago my best friend had one.

He had a CZ that was a 250cc motocross bike.  It would run all week, run all the practice session, then when it came time to race it lose spark and would not start.  He was constantly trying new points and condensor, cleaning plugs and point gaps..etc.  The bike handled like a dream and was a great bike......when it ran.  He eventually sold it and bought a Suzuki TM400 instead - it handled like a pig and the throttle was like a light switch - but it alwys started and never stopped running as long as you kept fuel in it.

I have seen what emotional baggage an unreliable motorycle is.....and I want nothing to do with them.

Been window shopping and I did find a good deal a few miles from my house. 2009 red/white with only 700 miles for $3,900 - Sold before I had time to look at it. Found a used orange/black '12 with 4,000 miles for $3,800 but it is nearly a 3 hour drive away. As for new, found a '12 orange/black available for $4,600 but also 3 hours away. The best deal locally is a new '12 orange/black, but they're only dropping the "starting price" $300 lower than the 2013's they have in stock. Which brings me to the one I'm talking to the dealer about - a 2013 blue/white S40 they just got in. They also have a new 2013 orange/black in stock, but my '11 was that color and I actually like the look of the blue/white better. Price isn't too good because the out-the-door price of MSRP + extra fees and blue sky pricing puts it at $6,400 - I countered with an offer of $5,500 OTD, but it didn't go over too well. I also let them know where I could get a still new 2011 Yamaha Vstar 650 custom that was out-the-door priced at $6,300 today, but they didn't get shook up about it. Right now I'm getting the "let me check with my manager" tactic, but I still plan on stopping back by the dealer today and see what the manager says about my offer.

I just bought one for my wife.  It is a 2000 Green and white with 1950 miles on it, prime condition no dings or scratches on it.  He had it listed on craigslist for $1450.  After I looked at it and found out it was in great well taken care of condition it rode great, no modifications not even the air mix screw.  I was happy to pay the 1450.  KBB had it listed at high value $1550.  My wife is so excited she is taking her MSF class in a couple weeks.

The "lamehomeO" taken from your spelling of Oklahoma just had me worried a little. I live 20 miles North of T-town.

I am very surprised by the current "list" and "out the door" prices for the Savage.  I am probably a bit spoiled by having enough mechanical skills to work on my own bike....and not be intimidated buying a used bike - but those prices seem high and a "NEW" Savage may be getting to be too expensive for what it is......a 1987 design.

Around the Cincinnati area you can buy a Savage with 1,000 miles or less for around $ 4,000.  If you are willing to buy one with 5,000 miles or so the prices go down to about $ 2,500.  A bike with 12,000 miles are usually not very pretty and the asking price is $ 1,500.  I have found that in this climate the bikes corrode a bit and the spokes, chrome and aluminum parts usually show some corrosion.

If I was spending $ 6,000.....I probably would not buy a Savage and would get something that my wife would be comfortable on the back.

Post by Charon on 03/28/13 at 04:59:51

The current MSRP for the S40, taken directly from Suzuki's site, is $5699. Add the usual dealership fees and you'll be easily over $6000. Here in Nebraska the dealerships do not collect the sales tax - the county treasurer collects it during the process of titling the vehicle. With the sales tax, property tax, registration and plate fees, one can expect to part with another 10% of the purchase price at the courthouse.

By the way, last time I took mine through Colorado, some guy at a gas station said "Nice looking bike. Is it new?"

+1, as a matter of fact, I just picked up a like new 2007 C50 with 2,000 miles for a lot less than that. The dealer had the bike for about 6 months and that is still a "winter price" and cash talks. The spring or summer price would have been book.

Deals are out there if you are patient.

Good hunting

The Savage/S40 fills a rather unique niche. It is the only "thumper" cruiser on the market. Other thumpers exist, but there aren't any other cruisers. The KLR650 and the BMW with the Rotax 650 aren't cruisers since they are aimed at adventure touring (and the BMW is considerably more expensive). The Royal Enfield is more of a "standard." Substantially every other cruiser is a V-twin. Adding that second cylinder usually adds some weight and complexity, and in today's world the S40 is one of mighty few carbureted bikes remaining. Even the Royal Enfield has fuel injection and a catalytic converter.

Looks like I'll be riding a new Vstar 650 custom...when my brother decides to let me borrow it. He's having a birthday in 2 weeks, so I gave him my S40 money so he could get the bike he wanted now. With the agreement that I would be paid back when local dealers were making better deals on the S40 - probably at the end of the year in time for Christmas. If the OTD price is still $6,000+ or I can't find a real nice low mile used S40, I'll probably look at a HD 883 Iron or Yamaha Bolt. But hopefully It'll be a new Blue/White Suzuki S40 for a price similar to what I paid for the '11 S40 I had - OTD priced for about $4,500.00, new.

Post by Buster on 04/09/13 at 17:57:21

Brother didn't get the Vstar 650 - he signed the papers today on a 2012 Red Vstar 950 with a solo seat. Said I could ride it some until he gets me paid back for my loan, but I still plan on getting a S40 just as soon as I can afford it.

BTW, anybody know if there will be any changes made to the 2014 model? Thanks.

Title: Re: Looking for another S40, probably...
Post by Charon on 04/10/13 at 10:59:14

It will be interesting to see if there will even be a 2014 S40. For the last few years speculation has been that the carbureted S40 will not be able to meet new emission standards and Suzuki will have to go to fuel injection and a catalytic converter. That in turn would probably raise the price at least a few hundred dollars, and if the gas tank isn't redesigned the volume taken up by the fuel pump will reduce the gas capacity of an already small tank. At least Oldfeller's "vacsucker" would go away.

I got my 2012 last month for $3988 on sale then all the stealership costs put it to $6k. Zero down, zero interest for 60 months came out to $106 a month. Have been following this bike and a few others for 8 months waiting for the right time.

California seems to be a sellers market and everyone on CL has a low-miles, mint condition, Harley looking Yama-Honda-Kawa-HD-Suz-Bue-Apri-whatever and is way over book value. The new bike was cheaper that what people were wanting for used comparables.

Last month my woman moved up from a GZ 250 and bought a red 2006 S40 with 3,100 miles on it for $2,850 at a dealership here in Michigan.   It came w/ a windshied, engine guards and saddle bag supports.  It is a very clean bike.    With tax and plates it was $3,037 out the door.  I thought it was an OK deal, but not a great deal.

We wanted this bike because it matches my red 2006 Suzuki S83.  All of our apparel is red, as well as my 96 Goldwing.   The S40 is 110 miles away.   Now we have to wait until the weather gets better so I can ride it home.   8-)

$5700 for a bike that was a rip off at the $4200 OTD mine cost new in 98? It's at best a $3K machine, the tooling is long since paid for.

Around here in the winter (like west TN gets winter, give me a break) that kind of money will put you on a nice used Big Twin. Evo or early production Twin Cam, but...

If I'm going to drop 6 grand on a metric, it will be a really clean low miles Kawasaki Vulcan 800 A or Drifter, 1500 Classic or Drifter. And the ones other than the A would be getting a wide 21" front wheel so they'd actually handle instead of wallow through curves. Can't stand riding the first year 1500 Drifter here with a 16" front wheel and 130/90-16 tire. I've put maybe 4 miles on it (it has over 90K miles on it, and had 1600 miles on it when my friend bought it in 2007). And no, he doesn't own any other form of transportation.

A dealership in Lincoln, NE has one for sale. This is the link. http://www.starcitymotorsports.com/2005SuzukiS40---LS650P-inventory.htm?id=401484&used=1&vin=JS1NP41A852100191
This dealership has a fixed and non-negotiable "doc fee" of about $160 added to their price. Every so often they get a used one, and they typically ask well over $3K for it. A month or so later, it is gone. Yet, when I ask $2500 for my '07, no one even tries to counter offer. I simply don't understand.

Edited to add: Actually, I think I may understand part of it. People go into dealerships with the idea that they might actually buy a motorcycle. They wander around and see the prices, then gravitate to the S40, which even at dealership pricing is still about the least expensive "real motorcycle" in the place. They have usually already decided a mere 250 isn't a "real motorcycle" so the 650 cc S40 looks pretty good. They also figure the dealership has checked the machine so it won't have any problems for a while, and at the same time figure a private owner is trying to unload problems.

And after reading all these prices, I think I got a good deal on my S40 which I have had for a week.  A 2009 with 182 miles and I paid $2750 from a private owner who had it on C-List!!!

Salesman that sold me my last S40 said he'd be getting some in a couple of weeks and hopefully they won't all sell before I'm ready to buy. I'd prefer to buy new, and I still think the S40 would be best for me since I want my next bike to be simple and light. After looking at all the other bikes I like, the only other bike I would consider is the (not so simple) Moto Guzzi v7 Stone - cost is similar to the Yamaha Bolt, but weight of bike is pretty close to the S40...I think the v7 only weighs about 20lbs more. And the Bolt weighs over 500.

Found a new 2011 blue/white S40 priced for $4,399.00 that I'm going to look at in 3 days during my vacation time. It's 223 miles away, but it is exactly in the area where I had already been planning to spend some of my vacation. If I don't buy, it won't be a wasted trip - should strap down in the back of my Nissan truck if I do decide to buy.  :)

For you or anyone else considering the Royal Enfield as a substitute, do not even buy that bike before you test ride it.  I did last year and for the first 10 minutes riding down the city streets I was thinking nice bike but then I got it up to freeway speed.  Handlebars vibrated so badly after 50-55 mph that my hands were going numb before I got back to the dealer.  For only around town speeds it's great.  On the freeway would be agony for going any more than one exit.

The 2011 that I went to look at sold on Saturday, but they just got a 2013 S40 in for $5,699 - didn't buy it. Had a new 2012 Boulevard C50 that was discounted about a thousand. My total OTD price for the C50 was $7,098.78 and I won't pick it up until next Tuesday (next day off) since it was raining today and I didn't have my riding gear with me.

 >:(

Glad I stayed with a Suzuki, and that I was able to get the 2012 with the whitewall tires and metal studs on the seat.

This is just a "search" photo, but I'll post real photos next week.
