Title: BOOM
Post by thumperclone on 03/21/13 at 22:52:32

sittin on the couch tues morn(i work second shift) and the house shook
and windows rattled
2 blocks up a traffic light crew hit a 150 psi gas main that flooded a house occupied by college students..
flames were thirty feet in the air as the em services started to show up..
3 were taken to the er 2 released one still in hosp.all from the house that blew.
one of the students smelled a strong odor of "onions" and lit some inscense KAPOWIE..
amaized no deaths
we were evacuated the first nite some let back yesterday and today as crews drill hole and flood the sewer lines to expell and remaining pockets of gas
the hole in the line was 1/2 a block from the exploded house
clay pipe sewer line joints allowed the gas to enter

In the summer of '73 a back hoe broke a regulatore for the main gas supply for a nieghbourhood in London that I was living in. It changed the pressure from 6 oz to six pounds in all the gas supply for the nieghbourhood. At first I thought it was a sonic boom, then after about 5 more booms I went outside to see what was going on. All around me houses were on fire. Thank God it was in June so furnaces weren't on, but everyone who had a gas appliance on had a fire. Seven on my street alone.

Onions? Onions? They're kiddin, right? I worked HVAC for years and dealt with gas.....both natural gas and propane/bottled gas and I never smelled onions. Stinky, rotten egg smell but never onions.

At any rate, I hope they all recover 100%, and thumper I hope your heart is back to normal cause I've been there and that's a heck of a rude shock!

Where I live there are numerous underground caverns where they have mined the salt out, and now store natural gas in some of these caverns. Several years ago one of these caverns leaked into another area and fountains of water and gas shot out of the ground in random locations around the city, some as high as 30 feet. Before they got it figured out a few people accidentally ignited some leaks that were gas only and some buildings were destroyed. Ever since then they drive these sniffer trucks around town checking for gas.

Well around here there are daily BOOMS and house rattling, sometimes up till around 2am in the morning!
Price you pay when living near an airforce base that has fighters and one that has C130 gunships and bomb ranges all over the place.
Good to hear everything came out ok and yours didn't go boom.....keep your head down and your #ss covered!
