Title: Fuel overflow? Flooding out? Post by oldsavage on 03/21/13 at 20:13:24 Got two new tires put on the wifes savage today and on the ride home, I could barely keep it running. When I got to the house (8 mile trip) there was fuel residue on and below the tool kit box and on the heat sheild below it. It smelled as tho it was flooding out and halfway home I checked the choke, it was in, but it would almost die when I started applying throttle and letting out the clutch. I had to high rev it to get it to roll and if at the top of rpm before shift it would start sputtering. Going to dissasemble the thing tommorrow if I have time see where the carb fuel lines and all the vac and overflow lines are located. Any heads up would be appriceated, the bike was running flawlessly on the way into town and for the first 10 minutes after. I drove it to a fast food place and spent 2hours there goofing off waiting for the wife. When I got on it, I let it warm up for about two minutes and at the first stop light it started acting up. |
Title: Re: Fuel overflow? Flooding out? Post by rfw2003 on 03/21/13 at 20:34:57 Sounds like 1 of 2 issues here, either the float it sticking/leaking causing the fuel flow to be constant into the carb, or if you still have the stock vac sucker petcock you could have a ruptured diaphragm in the petcock causing fuel to leak down the vacuum side of the petcock and into the carb. Title: Re: Fuel overflow? Flooding out? Post by verslagen1 on 03/21/13 at 21:27:12 check the float valve, sometimes a little scheissa gets in there. pull the seat out there's screen on top. |
Title: Re: Fuel overflow? Flooding out? Post by oldsavage on 03/22/13 at 11:30:04 Just tried to find out what was up, the bottom of the air filter was full, and I mean FULL of gas! I got about a cup and a half of gas out of it, so whats up with that? Where would gas to if the diaphragm was broken on the petcock? Where would the fuel go if the float was stuck? Usually if there is gas in the air filter it means there is too much flowing out of the carb and it gets blown back into it, but 1 1/2 cup? that was waaayyy to much. Fill me in on what ya think or know, i'm letting it air out and will try to start and run it without the air filter (which was way dirty, so i'm gonna replace it) and see if it will run or I can spot the gas problem. |
Title: Re: Fuel overflow? Flooding out? Post by oldNslow on 03/22/13 at 11:40:25 Take a look at this link. I think it might be the answer. http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1251932429/1 |
Title: Re: Fuel overflow? Flooding out? Post by oldsavage on 03/22/13 at 11:47:36 Thanks tons....does sound like the vac diaphragm on the petcock, now to order me one that will work. I know the 660 Raptor petcock is a replacement, but what make is the raptor? suzuki? kawi? honda? yama? found it, yama, but what year? LOL nevermind read farther down the post...... And i've looked for the oil filter part number everywhere, the owners manual don't have it, and none of the posts i've looked on search here, have it listed either. |
Title: Re: Fuel overflow? Flooding out? Post by Dave on 03/22/13 at 11:52:09 THe 660 Raptor is a Yamah Quad. The correcdt part number is 5LP-24500-01 from your Yamaha Dealer where it will be very expensive. Online sources can provide the factory one for far less. It is currently $ 18.46 from Ron Ayers: http://www.ronayers.com/ProductDetails/N/687/SKU/808680 Here is a thread about the Raprtor petcock I did: http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1340021926 |
Title: Re: Fuel overflow? Flooding out? Post by EJID on 03/22/13 at 11:55:38 I ordered one from RonAyers last March and it was a whopping $18.46 before FRT, not sure what year I was searching for, but the part # was 5LP-24500-01-00 I think several years use that same part # Also it was a RonAyers sku#808680 8-) |
Title: Re: Fuel overflow? Flooding out? Post by oldsavage on 03/22/13 at 12:08:32 Looked on ron ayers site, the 5LP-24500-01-00 raptor 660 petcock is now $30.24 Anyone still selling it for the $18 price? |

Title: Re: Fuel overflow? Flooding out? Post by oldsavage on 03/22/13 at 14:08:07 That site looks totally different than the one I seen, had already ordered one from another parts store for $22 + shipping, total was like $26, it will be here wed. Thanks for the info tho, i added the site to my favorites. Got the oil and filter Ordered the petcock Got the vacuum plug Now what else should I do when I empty it and pull the tank? Anything special I should look for? I'm not hip on doing the carb plastic washer removal yet, haven't recieved the impact screwdriver from Harbor Freight yet. |

I'm not 100% sure but I think you might be able to swap petcocks without removing the tank if you want to. At any rate I'd get that done and go for a ride to make sure the original problem was gone before I got into anything else.(Just my 2cents) |
Title: Re: Fuel overflow? Flooding out? Post by oldsavage on 03/23/13 at 13:28:52 Thanks for the info, i'll look at it and see, but the tank speedo rattles a little bit and I might want to see what I can do to fix that. |

Yes it can be changed without removing the tank fairly easy, but since you have the speedo rattle you might wanna take a look in the Tech section in the Table of Contents post around post #4 and you will find a link about the speedo rattle and fixes for that. R.F. |
Title: Re: Fuel overflow? Flooding out? Post by oldsavage on 03/24/13 at 22:14:53 Read thru the speedo thingy and might wait a bit, its always easy to remove a tank anyway...well...on a good day. After our ride today I went back out the the garage to empty my backpack and kicked the air filter I had taken out of the savage, I had laid it down next to my toolbox on a rag to keep it off the floor which in florida means sandtrap. The rag and filter are both still soaked with gas from the overflow I had, guess I'll be ordering a new air filter too, even the foam seal is soaked. Air box is now dried out tho..... Tommorrow afternoon i'm moving the engine guard bar from the rebel over to the savage, i'm hoping i'll have enough washers to make a good fit, looks like the engine sits a little to the left, hopefully the bar won't mess up the belt alignment. |
Title: Re: Fuel overflow? Flooding out? Post by splitting_lanes on 04/07/13 at 18:50:51 I have this same issue, gas in the air box. I've been through the carb, Can't find anything obvious. Should I do the petcock update? I think the petcock is stock. The fuel just dumps into the air box, but only when the engine is (almost) running. Thanks in advance. |

Title: Re: Fuel overflow? Flooding out? Post by old_rider on 04/08/13 at 20:32:52 You can tell if its a vacuum petcock if there is a line covered with a spring-like cover going from the petcock to the oposite side of the carb. |
