Title: hardtail's
Post by dirty dog on 03/18/13 at 10:37:05

Hay out there I'm new to savage world but I'm building a hard tail for one that I have. I'll post some pic. when get set up it  is there any inrest
out there for a weld on kit like the one's for the xs650 world ( I have built 5 of them so far ) no I'd like to start building ls 650 hard tail kits. Like the ons or the xs650 cost would be some where around $250.00
for the diy kit.

There was another fellow within the last year that was going to make hardtails available.  He wanted input on the length and some other particulars that people wanted.  As far as I know.....He never actually came throug and built any.

I'd honestly be more interested in a BMW/Indian/BSA type plunger frame.

The Savage wheelbase is so small that a rigid frame keeping the factory belt drive setup looks rather stubby. With a chain conversion and a 4" rearward stretch a weld on rigid conversion looks really good on them. A bolt on conversion like those available for XLs, Big Twins, Brit twins and XS650s would likely sell better than a weld on kit, but, the frame is so odd as shipped that it isn't really feasible.

If somebody could engineer an honest, functional, bolt in points conversion and/or kicker conversion...

RYCA Motors makes a bolt on hard tail kit.

HOLY CRAP !!!!!!!!!! $995.00 for a bolt on hardtail. You can get a whole frame from Voodoo Vintage for that.I just bought a weld on hardtail for an XS for just over $200.00.

Yeah, the Ryca stuff is spendy, and way too rich for my blood.  A weld on could be sweet, though.  The XS650 weld-on's out there generally look pretty good, IMO.

I'm with WD....a plunger type frame, similar to the Saviour frame from Amen company back in the late 1970's would be trick!

I can picture a plunger frame and a springer front carrying a Savage engine. Talk about a head-turner! Heat it up with Lancers 694cc kit and cam.......a real Hurley killer!

Aw Versy!!! Now yer gettin teckinal on me! ;D

Honestly, it's been too many years ago. I had a Triumph 650 single-carb mounted in a "Saviour" frame designed for the Honda 750-4 and it really rode and handled pretty good on our Kentucky two-lane roads and in those days I rode "balls-out" most of the time. The friend that helped me build the scoot did all the set-up work and tuned the plunger and springer every winter for me. I will admit to also having a sprung solo seat that helped too!

Anyone have any pictures of a weld on with stock belt drive? I hard tail strutted mine but I'm looking to do a full on weld on as soon as I get someone who can weld and willing to not rape my bank account. I'd like to keep the belt drive could I just get a longer belt if the weld on doesn't look right?

I don't believe you can get a longer belt.  Another fellow on this site contacted the manufacturer of the belt, and they claimed their belts in longer lengths are not made the same and would not hold up to motorcycle use.  The Kawasaki EN LTD has the same belt that is about 1/2 inch longer or somewhere around that........but those belts are hundreds of dollars.......for half an inch increase in length.

mine could be shortened up to work with belt ( I thing they look to stubby imo) my kit in an unwelded kit could be adjusted to fit any
lenght for belt or chain

You know, a hinged rear fender off a UL/VL, Knuckle or Pan would go really well with that frame...

I run a solid version off an FL Shovelhead on my bike.

If you search thru the kawa bikes starting with the EN440, a few use belts that is similar to ours, not exactly but close enough to be compatible.  And longer.  The EN440 (I'll have to look it up) was the shortest, but about a 1" longer.  I scored both pulleys and a belt for about $50.  I forgot how I found the belt lengths, possibly thru the OEM suppliers, some will list number of teeth.

The tooth count of the kawa belt I got is 137
ours is 133
that's about 1.1" longer between centers.

My very limited experience with hardtails came from Cushman scooters decades ago. The hardtail essentially destroys any usefulness of the rear brake, unless the road is very smooth. Most Cushmans had only rear brakes - no front brakes at all. When the rear brake is applied, and the wheel hits a bump, it bounces into the air; the brake locks; and when it comes down it skids. Your experience may differ, but for that reason alone I won't have a hardtail. The rear suspension forces the wheel to stay in contact with the road much better than gravity alone.

Those guys at voodoo are legit. i didn't see a kit for the savage, as it appears to still be in development. I remember the one guy from voodoo was on this site a while ago building one. It would be worth emailing them.  judging by their other kits, a weld-on would be in the $200-300 range. Hell, 3 of the 7 photos on their home page are of a savage! http://www.voodoovintage.com/index.html

David at VoodooVintage has released his new weld on hardtail for the savage... $220 for a weld yourself kit.... $300 for an assembled hardtail. Nearly 4" stretch and a 2" drop. Pretty sweet deal, and I plan on getting one once I replenish the bike build account.

Whistles.
