Title: Throttle question
Post by JRLeathercraft on 03/17/13 at 18:07:08

Hi,

My savage is idleing a little too fast.

I looked down at the carb and noticed a gap between the  part that holds the cable and the adjustment screw.

When I manually push the piece to the screw it seems to idle corretly. When I put gas to the throttle, the piece doens't meet the screw and the gap is there again.

I can't find a way in Clymer to get rid of the gap.

See pix.

2 things to check there.

1. Check the routing of your throttle cable and make sure it's not binding anywhere or being pulled tight anywhere when the bars are turned.

2. Lube your throttle cable so that the inner cable slides freely within the out housing.

Be careful about this.  Over time, throttle cables can get moisture down inside of them and the cable can rust.

I had this happen on a 250 cc Chinese scooter. I was on my way to work, tooling along.  I turn the throttle back and the cable SNAPPED.

At that point the bike dropped right down to idle and that is where it stayed.  No throttle cable, no go.  Just one more day I pushed the scooter home ...LOL.

Do you have an owners manual?  On page 49 are the instructions for adjusting the cable using the adjustor on the throttle assembly on the handlebar. It may just be adjusted too tight. You should be able to turn the grip a little bit before it starts to pull the cable.

How hard do you you have to push the throttle wire reel to make it touch the screw?  Are you stretching the cable, or are you pulling out slack?  If you're stretching then I'd go with adjustment.  If you're pulling slack back out, then it's most likely lubing your cable/checking your routing.

Not very hard. It doesn't take much to make it touch the screw.

I don't have the original manual.

Maybe you could scan the page and send it to me?

Thank you

I would suggest you disconnect the throttle cable at the carb, and then move the carb butterly by hand.  If it closes completely everytime - then the problem is with the cable or the throttle grip.  If the problem is the cable - check if it is adjusted with a slight amount of slack, and see if the twist grip and cable move smoothly.

Id lay a hand on the part the cable is hooked to & swing it to close it with one hand while I held the gas with the other. Then id crack the gas open a ways & slowly let off & see how it feels down on the carb, both hands at once. Mite be time for a cable. Ive never seen one get tite over time, Sounds like crud inside, between the cable & housing to me, Id probably Seriously lube that thing up & adjust it. I like mine to start giving it gas as soon as I twist it. Or it feels like theres a lag when Im layin on it out of a turn,

RESOLVED:

I just did the throttle adjustment per the owner's manual on page 49.

Works just fine.

I remember the little metal plate under the compartment that the grips fits into was loose when I got it.  So maybe it was knocked or something by the previous owner.

Thanks everyone!
