Title: Bar end mirrors, what's the deal?
Post by ToesNose on 03/13/13 at 18:49:31

I've gotten conflicting points of view over the years,
-Some people say they add visability even though they are typically smaller mirrors, they do have the advantage of being farther out.
-Others say they don't care for the placement and that they aren't very practical and mainly for asthetics.

I can understand the advantage of their angle and being able to see behind you better instead of just looking at your shoulders which is about the best you can do for looking behind you with stock type mirrors, and although I always look over my shoulder to change lanes and such do they take away too much side view since they are typically smaller mirrors and are farther out?   :o

Thanks in advance for any input since I've never had the chance to ride a bike with them  ;)

The lens in bar-end mirrors are usually a little wider angle than stock mirrors.. (so things appear smaller and further away)... but,.. they do afford a good good wide view of what's behind you...
... and they don't block your forward view like regular mirrors...
... and they aren't sticking up all dorky like standard mirrors... ;D...
I... like'em...

Over the years I've ridden stock(upright position),"cafe racer" and cruiser type scooters. Some of the cafes had bar-end mirrors and I just did not like the look.

I will say that on the "lay down" style of riding you do on a "cafe" the bar-ends did allow you to see behind without sitting up and catching the wind.

I'm a big fan of bar end mirrors, but........I ride sport bikes.  Just like ZAR stated, you don't have to change your position to see behind you.

I voted as "used 'em and like 'em" but I'd like to clarify, I've never used 'em on a cruiser.

Are you a RYCA guy or stock?

Stock with the 2007 more narrow straighter bars.  I like the idea of seeing what's behind me better, other then that the stock mirrors don't bother me at all. Yea bar end mirrors generally look pretty cool, but there are lots of aftermarket stock replacements that would suit the bike too so that's not the main concern for me.

I'm jones-ing to answer this because I have just installed bar end mirrors on my bobber build, but I still have about 2 weeks till it's back on the road. I can say I love the look, but as for function, I can't say yet.
