Title: K&N Air Filter??
Post by savagerider87 on 03/08/13 at 16:52:05

Does K&N have an air filter application for the savage? If so, what other adjustments would I have to do to the bike if I installed one in the stock airbox??

Yes, there is... just google for it, to find best price...

You might need a rejet... depends on location elevation, and other mods...
You won't destroy your engine if you don't, but you won't take full advantage of the better breathing filter...

See here, for basic tuning tips... ;)...

Are there any folks that say the K&N filters actually flow better than a stock paper filter?  I mean folks that don't sell them, or have any agenda.

Do a quick Yahoo search for filter tests, and generally it shows the k&n filter flows about as good as any other filter, but filters out much less dirt.  There is an ISO 5011 test that shows the k&n flows better than lots of others,... but all things are relative.  Yes, it flows better,... so much better that on a Savage you might realize maybe a half a horsepower more.

Yeah, there is one and it fits perfectly, seems to give the bike a little more power, I live and ride at about 2500 feet and didn't do anything else to the bike it did and does run great.

I'll say it flows better... simply because I got lean when I swapped...
If you get lean... by changing a filter, you increased the airflow...

I'm not saying that is good, or bad,... it just is...
I bought it,... because I like to have a clean filter, and I don't like to buy new ones... and the K/N is washable...
Beyond that,... you ain't gonna' turn yer' putter into a wedge....
What you will do,.. is trade some powerband width, for a small peak in HP...
Whether that is beneficial to your riding style, depends on how you ride...
Personally,... I just wanted a re-useable filter... the difference in power didn't matter...

Don't expect to breath fire...

A K/N filter takes a bit of skill to use... too much filter oil, and it will reduce breathing,.. too little, and it will not filter...
You want to get all the fibers covered, but not drenched...
Then it will breathe a little better than a stock filter, and still filter well... K/N's actually filter better as they get dirty, because the flow is reduced... (as do stockers)...

Just clean it when it's dirty,... and it is a good filter...
No better or worse than a stock paper filter,... just a different option...
Like I said,... I have one... because it's washable...
Performance is secondary...

I read somewhere that a paper filter will clog up with moisture under wet conditions and an oiled filter won't. I have used K&N filters in every vehicle I have had since '82.

That does make sense, Art...
As paper absorbs moisture, and will swell, thereby blocking flow... and the fiber strands of a K/N wouldn't do so as much...
Paper filters use the density of the paper to filter,... whereas, fiber filters use the oil that is adhered to them to catch particles... (oil and water don't mix,... so the the oiled fibers will reject the water, rather than absorb it)...
...(now, I'm way beyond JMHO),.. and into vague theorizing)... ;D...

...and I live in Arizona... what is this moisture of what you speak?... :-?...

It has to be actual moisture, not humid air.  The stock Savage air filter system would get wet only if you fell over in a pond.  Riding around in the rain won't clog up the filter.
