Title: Re: Want to put a 17" rear wheel on your savage? Post by Super Thumper on 03/03/13 at 09:18:54 OK...I wanted to get rid of my OEM 15" rear wheel which in my humble opinion is too small. I tried to find all the Suzuki 17" rear wheels during a web search and simply did a copy and paste into this file...I didn't sort it for shaft drive or cast wheels since most of that info wasn't available from my search terms. I thought this might help someone find a 17" rear wheel that might fit the OEM swingarm....the rear brake torque arm will have to be fabricated for almost all of these wheels minus the shaft drive ones...thanks for the feedback folks, as always I like to hear it. |
Title: Re: Want to put a 17" rear wheel on your savage? Post by Super Thumper on 03/03/13 at 09:45:01 Up here in Vermont we ride the back roads most of the time since there is only one interstate highway in the whole stat . These roads can be narrow, bumpy, cracked and are sometimes gravel that can be dangerous if not ridden on a bike that can handle well. My 2001 Savage handles OK but I want more. I am looking at replacing the OEM 15" rear wheel with a 17" to give the bike a more balanced look...not a tail dragger like I think it looks like now. I also think a 17" rear wheel will improve the handling a little bit...a 17" 140 tire will have a slightly longer contact area with the ground due to its larger circumference while the width of the contact area will be the same. I little more rubber on the ground will help in my humble opinion. I already have a set of Harley Sportster 12 1/2" progressive shocks that will go on even if I don't get the rear wheel change sorted out before riding season starts. By raising the rear a few inches I seek to improve the tail heavy balance to a more neutral one with out the expense of shortening the front forks as RYCA has done with their kits. Ground clearance can be an issue on some of the dirt roads here so I will never shorten the front fork tubes. Except for necessary maintenance and repairs I stop all work on my personal bikes during the riding season...Up here in Vermont we ride from early march until sometimes early December depending on the weather of course. ..I experiment during the winter when I have the time to fix what gets screwed up. :o |
Title: Re: Want to put a 17" rear wheel on your savage? Post by SALB on 03/04/13 at 20:04:52 Have you considered 150/90-15 tire. The circumference is about the same as the low profile 17 you would have to use, and will fit a stock bike with minor clearanceing. You'll also have a lot more side wall to absorb some of the bumps. |
Title: Re: Want to put a 17" rear wheel on your savage? Post by Super Thumper on 03/05/13 at 06:56:13 I haven't thought of that but now that you mention it I will look into it......good idea! |
Title: Re: Want to put a 17" rear wheel on your sav Post by Serowbot on 03/05/13 at 14:31:09 Hi SuperT,.. Noticed that you posted this list in the Tech Section... It's not really Tech Section info... In there,.. we need the the results that may come from this type of list.. Once someone finds and buys specific wheel, and puts up a how-to with pics of the install... That would be Tech material... The list you posted, has been posted here before... http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1356838187/8#8 Anyway... the Tech post has been removed... Let's wait and see if anybody gets a wheel and runs with it... - Serow :)... |

Their site says they are 130/70H-18) and no issues; the guys using the Vintage Firestone tires with high profiles on their 18" rims are the only ones I've heard of that need to have their swingarm braces modified. Not sure if you can find another whole wheel to swap in, but you could get a 17" rim and order spokes for it from Buchannan's. I was intimidated by the idea, but it's not that hard to do. You could also look for another 17" rim from a bike with spoke wheels, as long as it has 36 spokes and drum brakes, the rim should work laced onto your stock hub.... Options! |

Title: Re: Want to put a 17" rear wheel on your savage? Post by ToesNose on 08/12/13 at 04:59:39 Gyrobob the problem is the OD of your SM 4.00-18 which is 26.7, how much did they notch it out? It would have to be notched out nearly 3/4" for it not to rub :o |
