Title: Winter sucks! But it can't last forever.
Post by wheelsoffreedom76 on 02/23/13 at 17:14:21

We got 15" of snow here in the last three days. And now...... A winter weather advisory for sunday through monday calling for another 15" of snow. I dont think we're in Kansas anymore! LOL.
I removed the tensioner from my S40 and had it modified (guy did a sweet job), still waiting on my new gaskets to arrive to put it back together. (UPS truck probably snowed in somewhere). If anybody sees spring or warm weather send it my way.

We're still suffering from the "can't make up it's mind" winter here in Kentucky. 50+ and sunny yesterday and today, Tuesday through the weekend it will be rain/snow mix and mid 30's.

Ya ride when ya can!

I'll take the snow over tornados, hurricanes and earthquakes any day.

I put the bike back together this afternoon. The modified tensioner looks soo much better ;D. The last person to change the oil filter left out the small oring  :-/, luckily I found one that fit in my assortment. She fired right off after nearly three weeks with lows in single digits, so the battery must be descent. It's 32 degrees out there, so my toes and fingers have left the building. I bought myself a shiny new helmet today, I think it's the first one that actually fits properly. It's supposed to be 55 on sunday, and I'm going to ride ;D.

Snowing here, kind of... Desoto County MS is BRACING for a whopping 1/10 of an inch... ;D  We might get 1/2" to 1" at the farm in NE Shelby County TN... but it is enough to knock the garden back by better than another week. Very heavy river delta soil, takes forever to dry out enough to run the tiller w/o snapping the driveshaft from the tractor to it..

Forecast called for sunny and 52 today, we got 39 and overcast. I went anyway and put around 40 miles on the bike. Until today I had only ridden it home from the dealer, and around the block a few times. I wanted to ride it enough to see if there were any more unknown issues to work on. The bike runs great now that it isn't sucking fuel through the evil petcock.
It was even colder and much more windy the last time I rode it, and I was pretty wired about having just bought a cruiser so I didnt really get a feal for it that time. I got to say the bike is pretty light, and nimble. I stopped once to reinspect the back wheel, and swing arm as the road i was riding down has grooves and ridges in the blacktop and was moving the bike around a little. I had to keep reminding myself, I grew up on dirtbikes on sand and dirt country roads. My pavement experience is fairly low.
I took it around the bypass a few times at road speed (60mph) and for the first time I may half way get why people rave about heavy bikes on the highway. It was comfortable in that it handles ok, it's just a bit more touchy to input than I expected. There a again I learned to ride on loose sand on dirtbikes.
I swung by the house and put on my baclava, and insulated gloves, and was fairly comfortable then, my legs were frozen, but coveralls would have fixed that.

Savage is 1/2 of an old Beetle, on even skinnier tires. What? Light weight, rut tracks like mad, can't get out of its own way, freezes you in the winter and cooks you in the summer...

My Savage's "barn buddy" is a 72 Super Beetle...

No problem... other than my idiot father in law getting conned out of the 2332cc dual carb SB engine and swapping in a 68 standard engine.  >:( Old fool couldn't get it to run right, mechanic convinced him the $4500 engine was bad... it needed a new distributor. Now the Bug is barn art until I can build the current engine into something decent. Or get my hands on an old air cooled 911 engine... ::)

Sorry WD! Just pokin a little fun at the "can't get out of it's own way, freezes you in the winter, cooks you in the summer" line. I grew up that way so it's normal to me!

And hate to hear that about engine! Sounds like you had a good mill. The "Bug" guys up here seemed to like the engine/transaxles from the bus/transporter for hopping up. I know those were close to bulletproof.

Supers came with Porsche struts, drum brakes and transaxle. 914 I think, whichever was the micro-roof MG knock-off. Not top of the line for the Porsche label, but definitely better than the standard Beetle stuff.

I need to find a frame for a project engine I found while letting a vintage Dodge club friend and his son do some metal detecting. Ancient, air cooled all iron boxer twin engine... No idea what it is out of, it is still sitting in one of the seasonal creek beds as an erosion control block. It does appear to have a drive shaft coupling though... could be agricultural, industrial, marine or truly ancient Euro-bike in origin.

Salty Holes (probably not what you are thinking)

In central Kentucky, high 40's today; high 50's tomorrow, low 60's Sunday. I got the bike back together with the versy cam chain tension adjuster, new clutch cover gasket, new exhaust header gasket, clutch cable adjustment and lube, sump full of Rotella T-6 and ZDDP Kicker; and took her for a 40 mile shake down run this afternoon.

In the MSF course, they warned us about oil, gravel, trash, road kill, and your old girlfriend before you got married; each of them things that just do not belong on the road and can get you in trouble very quickly. What they did not talk about are large patches of accumulated road salt in turns and new pot holes not there last fall. So I learned (almost the hard way) to look out for those salty holes.

Golf tomorrow and a long ride Sunday. It doesn't get any better than this after a long winter.

Good hunting
