Title: 1/4 mile time with cam swap
Post by trini tuner on 02/17/13 at 20:28:35

Lets say one was to buy a lancer cam, rejet the carb, muffler and intake, new cam chain and drop at least 50 lbs what times would be expected in the quarter mile with this setup? Whos done the lancer cam and tried it on the strip?   8-)

You'd have to ask Lancer direct.

He has three cams to choose from, many combinations of carb jettings,
and it also depends on what intake and exhaust mods you carry our.

The stock airbox in well made for puttputting around town but is extremely restricted above 4500-5000 rpm - hence, you lose the last 1500-2000 rpm of the powerband.

All "headwork" must be done with a "holistic" approach: if you do "x" to the intake, the carb will need to be adjusted to suit, as will the exhaust.

Else, it'll be like testing an athlete's time against the clock by improving his breathing, omitting track shoes and even forgetting to don his track suit.

8-)

The last time (several years back) I made timed runs the setup was:

VM carb with UFO & Dial-a-jet
Stage 1 camshaft
Outer exhaust port opened to 39mm
94.5mm piston (stock comp.)
Silicone carbide treated cylinder
1.65" ID header and high flow muffler
Heavy duty clutch springs

4.9 sec 0-60
14.2 sec @ 89 mph 1/4 mi.

Times were hampered by difficulty keeping the front wheel down.
Coming off the line from a dead stop was a challenge in getting max velocity while slipping the clutch and leaning over the bars as much as possible, which is not easy on the Savage due to the cruiser seating/foot positions.
I would expect that with RYCA rearset pegs would help with that.

Brings back good memories from 1967, when I was a lightweight kid,.....ran the 1/4 mile 90 mph at 14.2 on a new stock 750 Norton Atlas. If my s40 would ever run like that now, it would be scaaaaaaary !
Who am I kidding ?? As it runs now, it scares me  !!
