Title: electrical problems, wont spark...
Post by chad levert on 02/14/13 at 10:16:01

99 ls650 hardtail

tryn to get my bike to start, fuses are good, new solenoid, bypassed safety switches. got rid of key ignition replaced with 30amp toggle switch. no blinkers. good ground, full battery. fairly new plug. no spark at ALL. carb is clean, running raptor petcock. ran good before i rebuilt it but i did sit in the rain for about a month, that being said connections look good... also i do not have the decompression solenoid hooked up, figured i could just do it by hand

any ideas y it wont fire??

How do you know its not getting spark? YOure Sure its getting fuel?

i just recently cleaned the carb. today i also pulled the carb bowl off and the floats were free moving and fuel level in the bowl was normal, i almost positive its an electrical issue

does the decompression solenoid HAVE to be plugged in for the bike to run? and also i dont have the brake or blinker lights hooked up right now so there not grounded

i just pulled out my plug and put my volt meter tester on it and hit the start button and didnt get a signal, also put it on the hot side of the ignition coil and hit the start button and still no signal

Is it cranking? Did you remove ever the stator cover?

nevermind...you just answered that...just a click and nothing right?

its turning over just fine just no spark

oh, wait a second then...if you removed the stator cover it's real easy to get the washer on the thrust gear lost or put back on the wrong spot...
the starter gear then binds on the case...

number #2 washer

I think it was versy that saved me on that one...other than that I suck at electrics...

i know the washer your talking about, its in there for sure. i havent touched the engine since my last build, so when i recently rebuildt the frame and took the motor out is WAS running fine, the motor is turning over smoothly as normal

Well,, these things are Notorious for turning over & not having enough Ooomph to fire the plug off.. If the battery is not at Full Charge, start there.

If I remember correctly, coil is hot all the time, signal from CDI puts 1 side to ground, collapsing the field sending spark to plug.

well it seems the orange/white and black/white wires coming from CDI to ignition coil is getting no signal when i put the volt meter tester on it the only wires on the cdi is get signal when i turn it over is the wires for the rec./regulator

You might not be able to get a signal with a VOM.

just tried it, no blue spark at all...

I had the same problem not cranking...ended up replacing the plug...hooked the plug to the wire and got the blue spark...still no crank...so I took the carb apart several times...thinking all was good...floats moved...but after taking the thing apart for the 5 time or so and playing with the float...it came unstuck...did not realize it was stuck because it would move...but it moves alot...so I was not getting gas...put it back together and worked fine.

from the engine case below the clutch lever i noticed a wire, what is it for?

Title: Re: electrical problems, wont spark...
Post by Bubba on 02/14/13 at 14:15:50

ground wire to the case

If it was funk it wouldnt crank over,,

well it looks like that wire was cut so there no connector on it, so do i just ground it to the frame? where should i hook it up at?

btw, i orderd a new CDI thats gotta be the problem cause i have alil power coming in from the pickup coil but no power to ignition coil

I'm thinking that wire might actually be the neutral safety switch...i can't remember...but I also think there was a ground wire down around there somewhere to...maybe to the solenoid???
i told you I suck at electrics...

well when i pulled my bowl out i made sure the float moved freely and made sure the needle was free moving, but i do have something weird happening, when i super choke my carb with my hand i have gas shooting out the back of the carb........

hmmm i dont have my solenoid grounded right now, it needs to be grounded? right now i have it hooked up like this

battery positive to one side on the solenoid and cable from the other side to the starter

If it's coming out of a hole, then it's the neutral safety.

if it's on a bolt then it's the ground wire.

ok well i looked and dont have a ground wire anywhere on a bolt on the case, could someone post a pic of where this bolt is and where goes to?

By the way, did you cut out of engine stop switch just to check it out.  I like to double check the silly stuff first.  This is not to insult you, many of us have done this. :D

Thats right. If it was hooked up wrong the starter wouldn't spin the engine.

The wire circled in EJID's picture comes from the negative battery teminal.
