Title: List your favorite internet music station.
Post by Dave on 02/14/13 at 10:15:28

There is very little in this area available for music.....unless you want the commercial laden syndicated music stuff.

Lately I have found some really good radio stations on the internet for the Old Time/Appalchian/Bluegrass kind of music that I currently prefer.  Here is a list of what I currently know about:

SUGAR IN THE GOURD - This station plays Old TIme String Band, Appalachian, Bluegrass and Old Country music exculsively.  It is not a radio station - just and endless stream of music.

WMMT, Whitesburg, KY - I found this radio station one weekend while traveling.  They have some great Old Time and Bluegrass Music, and a few more modern programs throughout the day.  You just have to tune in and see if they are playing something you like.

WOBO, 88.7 Batavia, OH - This station plays Bluegrass, Old TIme and Old Country most mornings and a few evenings.  Thursday night and Saturday mornings are great!  Other times it can be Big Band, German or Celtic programming.  At noon weekdays it changes to the Radio Rosary......I tune away pretty quickly when that happens!

WNKU - THis used to be a really good radio station and it had a lot to offer.  Lately it has become oriented toward the college kids, as it is the Nothern Kentucky Univrsity radio station.  On Sunday it still has some good music on the "Front Porch" on Sunday mornings, and "Music From the Hills of Home" on Sunday nights.

Alleghany Mountain Radio - THis is a fairly new one for me.  It comes from somewhere around the Virginia and West Virginia area.  Some good programming at times...not so good other times.  They can be somewhat wordy at times and talk a while betwen songs.

Pandora - This one offers a certain amount of free listenign each month, and you can pick the artists you like and the website sets up a radio format that plays similar artists.  I have not been listening to it since I found the ones listed above.

You got any favorites?

I use Pandora. I paid for yearly subscription since I use it at work on a PC and wanted the app. It is probably on 90% of the time. The rest of the time I just play my expansive CD collection. I do love Pandora's custom station ability. What internet station will give me a mixture of stuff from the Butthole Surfers, Primus, Sausage, Buckethead, and more? :)

We've been using Spotify, found we liked it beter than Pandora because you could select specific artists and songs just as if you have the CD  :D

At $120 a year for premium, I will stick with Pandora. Although Spotify does sound interesting.

Don't listen to internet (or satilite) radio. It is compressed so much it sounds like crap. I listen to vinyl when I can, CDs when I have to. ;)

I haven't used any in a while, but use Pandora when I feel like it.  I think my Pandora station has learned me so well, I don't even have to skip songs very much any more.

Pandora did tick me off though, because they aren't gonna make a Windows Phone app!

I really don't know much about internet radio. Just started listening since I've been working the parts dept. Two other guys in there and the keep it on so I'm hung all day between country and rap! One day when they were both at lunch I did sneak over and find the RockaBilly channel on Pandora. Stray Cats,Carl Perkins,Jerry Lee and a bunch of other good stuff 8-)!

I listen to the iTunes radio thing (never have actually bought music from them). They have a couple I like: the classic country ones, and Boot Liquor, alternative country.

I used to listen to slacker, but lately I've been watching a lot of YouTube videos.  It's surprising how much you can find IF you know what to search for. :)

I listen to GrooveShark http://grooveshark.com/ . It is like Spotify (in the sense that you can pick artist, song, etc.) but it is free. Give it a try.

I tried this today. It is still too spendy to get the version that works on my phone and ROKU, but I did not need to create an account and I have been listening to Dope's 5 albums most of the day for free. Pretty cool!

When I work from home, I tend to stream http://www.wksu.org/classical/classicalchannel/ which is Kent State's classical channel via iTunes Radio.

In the office, I have a Zune filled with everything from country to jazz to rap to classic rock to metal to opera.  Some people may find it kind of weird go from Carl Perkins to Metallica to Wagner but I like it.  8-)
