Title: Oh NO!! FSO!!
Post by bobert_FSO on 02/11/13 at 14:30:14

Well, I just delivered my Savage to its new owner, making me a Former Savage Owner.  I had a lot of fun with it and sorry to see it go, but I can only justify one motorcycle to my wife.  I'm now riding a 1998 Kawasaki 800 Classic.  It does allow my large frame to stretch out better on longer rides.

That said, I plan to continue hanging around.  I enjoy the company.

I mentioned the forum to the new owner yesterday.  When I delivered the bike today, he said he had already checked out the site.  Hopefully, he will learn as much here as I did.

I used to be on http://www.kawasakimotorcycle.org/forum/ when I had my 1999 VN800A and then a 2005 VN800 Classic. It used to be a pretty good forum, but I haven't been on it since I wrecked on the Classic in 2008. I know a lot of the regulars had left there at one point. BUT, there was no better site for Vulcan 800s when I had mine.

How do you like the 800B? And if it hasn't been done yet, the bike works better with a 130/90-16 front, 150/80-16 rear. Mine had 130s on both ends, buyer post crash put on a rear 150 and a new steering head bearing and never had issues with it.

800A (21/16 wheels) also benefits with a 150/80 rear. I put 44K miles on an 80/90-21 150/80-16 Dunlop 404 tire set in 18 months with my 800A.

I'm running stock tire sizes.  130/90-16 front, 140/90-16 rear.  They seem fine to me.  Of course, I have no other experience to compare it to.  This is my 1st vtwin and the largest bike I have ever owned.  I do enjoy being able to spread out as opposed to the Savage.

Thanks for the forum hint.  I've been lurking on vulcanforums.com.  It doesn't have the homey feel of this forum.

Here's the 800B.

:-?...

Probably not,... I know there are more than a few,.. regretful FSO's...

Enjoy your new ride, Bobbert...

heheh A kid at church wants to straight up TRADE his Vulcan 800 for my savage... he says the 800 is too heavy to back up.

He must be a seriously small rider. If mine was back together I'd do that swap in a heartbeat IF his bike is an 800A. The B has a smoother ride, the A has a better seat and superior handling. The A is 468 pounds wet, the B around 480 pounds wet, according to the Caterpillar scale at he truck stop I weighed both mine at, my Savage as it sits is 292 pounds wet.

If his bike is a B, the trade would take 2 or 3 heartbeats... 800 Drifter he'd get the Savage and some cash in under a heartbeat, Savages are a dime a dozen, 800 Drifters are getting hard to find.

My Savage has always been considered my "cute little toy motorcycle", not as anything serious. At 6'2" 230 (or more in the winter) it is just too little. Even with all the mods over the years.
