They do make actual tools for it,... but,.. if you save your next old front brake disc pad, it does a pretty good job...
;)...

Here's what I've used in the past (was in a pinch):

It is a 2 1/2" OD flat washer.  I ground one edge thin enough to fit into the plug.  I clamped it into the jaws of a Vice-Grip to use it.  It worked great!

I also have the Motion Pro Timing Plug Wrench (http://www.motionpro.com/motorcycle/partno/08-0087/):

which works pretty good, but I noticed that none of the three blades is really the exact "proper" size for our bikes.

thanks guys. I asked for a local shop for a quote today on the valve adjustment- $370.00.

So I will be making one of these tools...

Gasket scraper from harbour frieght works perfect and has a square shank for using a wrench for more torque.

Hell I'll do it for half that.   ;D
Just pull right into the shop... no waitin'

(I wonder what the hot clearance should be)

I've used (with great success) a church-key style bottle opener with a long screwdriver put through the loop for torque.

I was working on the bike and had that bottle opener handy. Might have had a few empty bottles around, too, which made it seem like an even better idea....

If you do some searching, there is a replacement timing port cover that has a hex key slot instead of whatever psuedo-flathead slot we have. I want to say it came from a mid 90's VS800, but I wouldn't bet money on that.

Anti sieze is your friend.
That plug, amazing as it may be, does NOT hold that motor together. Tightening it as if it does is an invitation to pain.

Update: I used the Harbor Freight gasket scraper. Three bucks and worked perfect, as suggested.

Please anyone reply.

Top rotates left.

Make SURE the tool fits the slot.
Its curved in the back
Shove cardboard in to get that profile.
If ya booger the slot, a file handle / tang run across will set it straight.
I use a piece of lawnmower blade all fitted exactly.
I had to tap with a hammer to drive the file across to clean it up.
Impact can loosen what raw torque doesnt.

You want Full Engagement in that slot.

Thanks Justin,
I had made a tool from a old file, fitted tight but good not get it loose.
Yes, maybe tapping it would loose it up, I am trying to adjust my valves.
I am in 5 gear trying to get a perfect top location, a little hard to do..

Thanks  so much for the reply!

You could try it when the motor is hot The case may expand more than the plug Worth a try rather than damaging the slot,

Put a crescent wrench on the file and hold the file into the slot and tap on the wrench

When you put it back on. Finger tight only, it wont come loose. Mine has been running like that for years, never a problem.

I just discovered that an old 4 inch continuous edge sawblade (like for a grinder) has just the right radius for it! Easy peasy.
