Title: Tractor Supply muffler, AC-4
Post by RidgeRunner13 on 02/02/13 at 10:01:35

Looking for something for a real old school look, I ran across the tractor mufflers at TSC. After some measuring, I decided I would try the AC-4. The inlet was very close to the correct size to fit the Savage head pipe, just needing a little stretching with a hammer & one of my impact sockets. After getting that to fit, I cut it loose from the muffler, tweaked the muffler bracket & rewlded it at the angle I needed. Two bolts welded to the muffler body & it slides on & bolts to the bracket perfectly. My heat shield from my old turnout muffler still fit so I reused it. This is quieter than my previous muffler, which makes my wife happy, since she is currently learning to ride on this bike. I told her I would paint it (the bike) any color she wanted when she got her license.
So once again my plans for the Savage are up in the air. :o 8-)

RidgeRunner where'd you get your floor boards?  Not sure how I feel about them up front but kinda like them in the back for the wife.

That is quite interesting. Could you grab a sound clip/video?

It actually reminds me of a vintage triumph muffler. And yours was substantially cheaper!

It's probably adjustable, but is your foot brake cable rubbing against the rear flange of the muffler? Looks that way in pic 2.

1. They are H-D take-offs I got from a local bike shop for $40 a pair. Sadly, they have since moved away & I haven't been able to find them again. I put them on because my wife had bad knees & the stock pegs were very uncomfortable for her.
I had the Ed L. 4" extensions & decided it looked funny with floorboards on the rear & pegs on the front, so I picked up the chrome front boards from the same place, same price. I really like being able to shift my feet around for comfort.
2. It sounds a bit louder than a drilled out stock muffler, but deeper. It's a straight through design with a lot of 'fluted' edges to baffle the noise. I wanted a 20-30s look for it.
3. the brake cable has about 3/16" clearance at its' closest point, which is where it is in the picture.

It will eventually end up with a 'baby bagger' look when I'm done. I have a windshield I'm replacing on my 950 that I will make brackets for & put on this bike. My bags mount on ghost brackets I made several years ago & can be removed in a couple of minutes. 8-)

Are you using the stock toe shifter or did you come up with a heel/toe design as well?  I kind of like the look of floor boards, been kicking it around for awhile.

I've got Panhead half moon replica floor boards on mine. Much better even just sitting on the bike and wishing it was back together and running.

That's the muffler the factory should have installed from the word go... If there had been a TSC in the area 12 or 13 yeas ago when I redid my muffler/tailpipe it would have had one of those. Less money AND better made than Emgo/Motoasia garbage. LowBrow is selling Emgo crap? Traitors...  >:( I was going to get some stuff from them (braided wires, real coil, passenger foot rests of some kind, new grips, new mirrors since I broke one today due to rusty cheap Emgo pot metal pseudo-bolts)...

NRJ, I'm currently using the stock shifter, but I have a plan to add a heel piece to it. I  can't seem to locate the piece of an old brace I had set aside for this job.

WD, the TSC muffler is made much better than the 27" turn out I got from JCW. I'm sure it was an Emgo product, the chrome started rusting after about 6 months & I painted it with high temp silver. Can't really blame Emgo for the rust though, everything rusts in this enviroment.

I'm working on modifying my oem 950 seat to fit using the Savages' stock mounting points. Actually looks like it going to be a fairly easy seat to make work. I have a spare due to putting a set of Ultimate seats on the 950. Just took a break from the 650 to mount a trunk on the 950. 8-)
