Title: BS 40carb slide is black. from what?
Post by A-Bolt on 02/01/13 at 10:41:54

Is my carb slide is black from diaphram or that breather hose that goes into the airbox? I dont know! I tried carb cleaner to clean it but it didnt work. What cleans that black crap off the slide?  Also what do I do with that breather hose, how do I get rid of it?

that's the correct finish, leave it alone.

The slide is black,.. but I have seen them get a build-up of schmutz that makes them sticky...
Probably from crankcase breather, or just dirty air... just clean it of with carb cleaner... it'll be fine again for years...

It's anodized to protect it it from galling against the walls in the carburetor. Why on earth would you try cleaning it off?

You were saying?

Immediate response to something someone doesn't understand shouldn't be to ruin it. My roommamte does this same crap to me all the time. "Well I didn't know" is his favorite excuse. "I didn't know" is not an excuse to ruin things - it's an excuse to go figure out how it works. If this guy had a blow torch at hand he prolly woulda tried that.

If the bike was run without a filter ot with a very dirty one for a long time, I've seen the slide and the guide wear themselves with the grit coming in.
Cool.
Srinath.

My slide has the black teflon coating on it too, mostly.    It has worn away in spots and it actually could look "not on purpose" to a new person seeing it for the first time.

That an easy fix. some of that finish has worn off though.

I guess I better get rid of the valve cover breather or what ever it is going into the air box and its on the wrong side of the filter.

I thank you for your response gents.

Shorten the hose and install a small cone filter from the "performance" section on the auto parts store in it. You can't delete the hose or you'll either suck grit into the engine or blow out all the case/base gaskets when the crankcase gets over pressurized.

Humm, carb cleaner was a safe move, I thought. Not going any further and asking questions was smart, I thought! Using my mike torch, I didnt think it was necessary yet! I fill sorry for Mike's roommate and I pity a fool.  The very smart guys realized I had never seen a coated slide before.

Cavi seems to think everyone should already know everything before they ask a question...
You're not being helpful, or friendly here, Cavi... -Serow

I think it's dry lube over anodize, not black anodized

Neither had the guy who was working on Lisa's old Honda (per her father's request) and took a stripping wheel and sandpaper to the slide and carb bore... guess I know which bike is my new mail box holder... some bikes they just don't make parts for, not even Sudco the carb gods...

Asking is always a good idea. There are a few members who'll jump you for asking what they think is a common knowledge question. Carb cleaner won't hurt the coating. My bike is 15 years old, I've had it since it was new, and I have no idea what the slide looks like. Never taken the top off the carb (but I've swapped the jets a bunch of times).

My slide is black plastic.

I don't want to discourage Cavi's input here, since he adds valuable knowledge and experience to the hive mind.

The problem is that this medium of communication can often make you sound hostile or snide, when neither was your intention! 8-)

I need to remind myself of that fact all the time.....

I have zero patience for people who's first train of thought is to break something they don't understand.

Cavi- he didn't ruin it or torch it or anything else- he asked a legitimate question expecting a polite answer, (which is what this site is all about) which he didn't get from you.
