Title: Bedroll/blanket roll
Post by Greg on 01/31/13 at 20:01:13

I am hoping to do some riding and primitive camping this summer. Any suggestions for a DIY bedroll?

Check out the local Army/Navy surplus store. ;)

Greg, primitive to me still means a good night's sleep. I am 59 with a bad back, but I recommend websites like Sportsman's Guide, Cheaper Than Dirt, etc. We have access to Gander mountain and local sporting goods...and Army Surplus is good. But my best advice is to check out "Bicycle Camping" websites. They are crazy about size and weight, plus they recommend back pads for that good night's sleep. Have fun.  :)

Cotton...  buy cotton....
I have total insomnia if I try to sleep on anything but cotton...

Used to be,.. I just pulled my arms inside the sleeves of my t-shirt,... and I was asleep...
Now,... I need cotton,... and a credit card, and a Days Inn (...at the least)...
... and a real toilet, in the morning...

bad back?...
Credit Card... :-?...

If where you will be camping doesn't get too cool at night, a military poncho, poncho liner and sleeping mat might do. I know all three items will roll up pretty small and are light. The military poncho liners look thin but are quite warm when used with the poncho.

Don't forget to wear your silver spurs when you ride ;D

Thanks everyone. I suppose primitive was the wrong term. Primitive to me but still at a tent campground with a toilet. I have been thinking a 6x8 tarp, a couple of blankets, and a sleeping pad. I don't know why I always forget about the army surplus stores. Never thought of searching for bicycle camping. Visqueen is just plastic sheeting right?

Instead of a tarp pick up a hicking single person tent, it will take up less room then the tarp and if it rains or gets too windy you'll be sheltered.  Invest in a $7 can of scotchgaurd, set up the tent and spray it. Even tents that say they are "waterproof" can leak with a good downpour, never fun trying to sleep while getting rained on and even worse in the morning when everything is soaked   :-/

Greg what we used at Friendship Indiana at the National Muzzle Loaders camp was the brown duck tarp material sized and sewn to sleeping bag size and either used blankets or a modern sleeping bag inside that duck sleeve. It gave the look of the mountain Man era(and meet approval of the NMLA specs) and the option of light blankets for warm weather or the down bag for winter.

Let me know if you're rolling through my area.
I've always wanted to try that kind of thing and I have a week of vacation saved up.

We are still early in the planning stages. I will let you know when it is all figured out. Even if we don't travel up there, perhaps we can meet somewhere in that direction and terrorize some campgrounds. :)

I'm jealous of that one guy that posted here. I forget the name.
Bike + bed roll and just drive.
I finally got a helmet so I can leave my state.

My uncle went up to Canada and some eastern most point Eskimo village thing? last year.
Poured the whole trip.

I am hoping for warm, dry weather. I am sure we will have a rain date chosen.

I can't carry concealed to your neck of the woods. I can't go north legally at all. Not that it would matter, but it is in the back of my mind.
