Title: Can not remove seat, In turn can not remove tank
Post by Dooley on 01/31/13 at 18:36:46

I have a third bold holding my seat on located on the back fender. It is allen wrench hex key type. That is on so tight that I can not get it loose. I have tried and tried to the point that it is mostly stripped. With out removing that bold I can not get my seat off and in turn can not remove my tank.

Any ideas around this issue? I would like to change my spark plug.

Thanks,
Dooley

What year is your bike?  Does it have the one piece seat?

It is an 06. Yes a one piece seat.

Desperate times, call for desperate measures...
If you can't get Zen with a screw and driver,... just drill that sucker out...
Replace it with an Allen-head... and go on about yer' business...
:-?...

Honestly,... I get a vise-grip on it with my left hand,.. screwdriver or ratchet in my right,... and lean my forehead on to the end of the driver... ... somehow,.. this concentrates the effort... and bolts come free...
Always...
I will allow no other option...
No bolt can withstand my mighty forehead... (and I have the forehead dent to prove it)... :-?...
Seriously,... try it... ... (put your forehead down onto the driver)... (it works)...
:-?...

LOL nice post.    It already is an allen head and it is almost stripped out as is. And yes did lean into it with a wrench on it already. Might have to drill it out. Do you think I should try a hack saw and try to turn it into a flat head first?

Dooley, you may not wish to injure your beautiful forehead, I would suggest getting a hacksaw and cutting a slot in the screw head, then get the longest and biggest screwdriver you have, if the screwdriver has a square shank put a crescent on it near the handle and if it has a round shank use vicegrips, lean heavily on the end of the screwdriver and pull on the crescent or vicegrips. At best the screw will loosen, at worst you will remove what's left of the screw head, fall on the floor injuring yourself and cursing the idiot that wrote this.

Dooley, if you are changing the plug, check all the posts about thorough cleaning around the area to stop crap falling into the cylinder.

Well I guess that is the plan for tomorrow. Hey if I break the head off at least I can get the dame seat off so either way I will not be cursing you. Wish me luck,

Thanks guys I hope I get the darn thing off one way or the other.

my 06(got er new) came with back rest and rack, that bolt is a beoch
have T handle alan wrenches but didnt want to carry one in the tool kit so changed bolt out to hex head, a 6 way screw driver with and extension has worked for me..
if yours has the backrest/rack you may need to remove them to get a vice grip on the outside of the allen or was that a machine head screw in there?
if so drill and eazy out

Also, with a 1 piece seat, you really don't need that back bolt. The bolt on my 07 was either left off by the mechanic that changed the rear tire for me or vibrated loose. The rear seat bolt has been missing on mine for about 4 years now. Once you get that bolt out, leave it out.

Well no update to give, been working on other things. I like the idea of "Once out leave it out". That little POS is gone if I get it out. Or should I say when because it is just a matter of how.

Thanks again.

Dool,

Although I've never tried this method, some have had luck with recalcitrant Allen head bolts by tapping a Torx bit into the head of said bolt and taking it from there.

I'd try that before breaking out the drill motor.....

Good luck!

I assume your using a Metric allan wrench, as a standard one will seem stripped before you even start. :-[  Don't ask me how I know this. :-X

SALB you must have had the same high school shop teacher I did! I believe his name was something like Mr. E.X. Perience. I went to the Academy of Hard Knocks from 1955 to the present ;D. I expect to graduate sometime in the next 40 years ::)

You might try spraying some PB Blaster on it before you do the torx routine. Sometimes I've removed stripped allen-head screws by tapping a screwdriver in there, though the torx bit should work the same way.

OK, Thanks for all the advice. I finally got it off and did not have to drill it out. But I wish I would have done what I did from the get go and I would not have A; stripped the hex bold B; would not have had to hack saw a flat head notch in the head of the bolt.

As you can see from above I did hack a slot into the bolt but I still could not get the torque I needed to remove the bolt. But what i did do and wish I would have from the get go is. And I would recommend that anyone having this issue do first before they strip the bolt.

1. Remove side seat bolts.
2. Remove the seat bracket bolts. And remove the bracket.  Yes I know it is a pain in the butt because you can only turn the bolt about an 1/8 of a rotation at a time.
3. Lift the seat out enough so that you can move it back and forth. Doing so will loosen the bolt enough to be easily removed.

If I would have done this from the start I would not have stripped the bolt nor would I have had to cut the bolt.

Thanks again

I don't understand how that could work, but I'm glad it did. :-?

By moving the seat around and the bolt being the center point. It may have
A: Broke up any rust or crud that was keeping the bolt so tight.
B: May have turned the bolt back and forth thus loosening it up.

When I say I moved the seat back and forth I do not mean a little wiggle. I mean a good 10 to 12 inches at least. To the point that you could see most of the wiring underneath the seat. It was well out passed the frame on either side as I moved it back and forth.
