Title: timing chain advice
Post by scannerzer on 01/31/13 at 14:17:48

pulled the timing cover of tonight and found the tensioner to look like this

http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t373/Eddie096/9C32FA9D-3773-4618-A87C-C0DF5E6841F7-15464-00001E22DD88B6DA.jpg

going by the other posts i have read this is the maximum travel i should have

http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t373/Eddie096/D0FF36D5-1570-4019-AAD8-4F94AAD98C2A-15464-00001E230C11BEDD.jpg

so it's time to do something about it and stop the rattle i've been hearing!

is there a way of checking the chain stretch without removing it from the engine, wot do you guys think from the photo

by the way as i have to replace the oil can anyone recommend a brand available in the uk which has a high enough zddp rateing.
I have asked some of the companies who supply oil to my work (i work in a motor parts store) but none of them have even heard of it.
we also stock lucas oil stabilizer, does that boost it?

TIA

eddie

I can't help you on the oil available in the UK but I do not use any thing from Lucas and no the Lucas oil stabilizer will not boost it. I have never purchased oil that needed stabilising.

Check out the boosters in the approved oil thread.

17mm, shouldn't be rattling yet.  Of course, it could be to a fine tuned ear.   8-)

The cam chain adjuster is incapable of maintaining tension over the full life of the chain.  At 17mm out, you might have .020 to .030" stretch.

But your only choice is to replace the chain or verslavy it.

Did you paint the INSIDE of your engine? That's cheating... although, the bike does need every bit of help it can get in the oil department, and the paint will allow faster drain back...  ;)

I'd best check mine one of these days since it has 15 years of hard miles as of this coming weekend. No noises yet, but, I've never opened the engine up to see how it looks.

The cases that come from the factory painted black - are painted on the inside as well as the outside.  (The picture doesn't show it all that well - but the inside is black....trust me!).

My bike has 10,200 miles on it. I am installing a Big Bore Kit & Stage I performance cam from L ancerand had the cylinder head ported at the local performance machine shop.

It is not wise to use your old cam chain when upgrading to a high performance cam...buy a new one!

I had Verslagen modify my tensioner and then bought a NEW timing chain from this place............

After searching the internet for hours they had the best price.

Link to Verslagen's Place in the suzukisavage.com marketplace for the tensioner mod is:

ZDDP can be found to add to oil if you want. They add it to the rear end gears of Moto Guzzis regularly.

The Verslavy mod is, IMO, the single most sensible mod to make on these. The Super Verslavy comes with a detent built in so it Cant spit its guts out. If I was keeping mine, Id do it.,

Same as the silver ones, you just don't notice it, cause it's... silver.

has anyone had any issues with the wear on the teeth of the pawl.
i gave mine to a local shop to have it extended and they refused because of worn teeth

I once heard a guy refused to lend a rope cause he was hanging a sack of flour from the roof.

the wear he is referring to is on the bottom right just in front of the machined area

http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t373/Eddie096/4E6386FE-8E41-494A-BA88-891486824152-16127-00001F8590467F51_zpsbe30fc5c.jpg

is it likely to do any harm ? as far as i can see the pawl hardly touches this area

Most of the damage to parts that don't eject are from up and down motion.
Check inside the bore of the housing for pockets that the plunger can get stuck in.  And how oval is the end of the hole?  Stick the plunger in  :o  and check up and down play.

Now up and down play is the main concern, but side to side sometimes happens.  Which is the wear you see on the back of the housing to the guide.  This will be a problem with this damaged plunger as you'll get more wear in the future.

I'd buy a new one myself.  Especially if you didn't want to visit it again.
Of course if it meant goin hungry for a week, I'd weld it.
