Title: 2003 Savage for $1550 - decent deal? Post by Hootis on 01/15/13 at 15:46:48 Never owned one, hell, been years since I've had a motorcycle at all. Saw this one in a parking lot and am interested - and thrilled to have found this forum for help with this beast. 8400 miles. Good price? Image in next post. I'm mostly interested in a simple bike to zip around town; no major highway nor commuting. The mileage is a plus. Savage fit the bill? |

Title: Re: 2003 Savage for $1550 - decent deal? Post by oldNslow on 01/15/13 at 16:11:18 I paid $2000 for a 2006 with slightly more miles (9200) that's going to need a front tire before next summer, so $1500 seems like a reasonable price to me as long the the bike is in good shape. Be sure to look in the tech section here. A lot of good info on what to look for. |
Title: Re: 2003 Savage for $1550 - decent deal? Post by Serowbot on 01/15/13 at 17:11:06 If it looks god and rides good,.. I think the price is good... How old are the tires?... That's a $250 expense... If they're older than 6 years,.. you should think about new ones, regardless of tread... ;)... |
Title: Re: 2003 Savage for $1550 - decent deal? Post by jcstokes on 01/15/13 at 17:35:04 Check the oil level and colour before you buy, if the seller will allow, get a harsh discharge test on the battery. According to some American reviewers, the only thing the Savage /S40 doesn't like are "wide open interstates", despite the torque you will want to be down a cog or two if you are overtaking at higher speeds. |

Title: Re: 2003 Savage for $1550 - decent deal? Post by ZAR on 01/15/13 at 17:56:40 Hoot if everything checks out that should be a good deal, not a steal, but fair. I gave that for my 1996 last spring and it had 8400+ miles. |

FWIW, that's exactly how I use mine (see my signature block). The Savage does this so well that I sold my truck over five years ago and haven't owned a cage since..... |

[/quote] Digger is right ............but don't let these scooters fool you........I commute 40+ miles each way to work, almost all of it either two-lane US highways or interstates. The Savage rolls right on down I-71 at 70-75mph with no problem. Small it may be.....but it sure does not act small! |
Title: Re: 2003 Savage for $1550 - decent deal? Post by Chris Roth on 01/15/13 at 19:10:51 I got a 95 for $1k + $200 in maintenance to get it ready for me. Love it and think its totally worth it. I hope you get to enjoy the new ride. |
Title: Re: 2003 Savage for $1550 - decent deal? Post by NorCalRider on 01/15/13 at 20:01:32 A few months ago I paid $1,500 for 1999 Savage (with 4,200 miles) In California. So I would say it is a good deal. Go for it. You will love it. And definitely take the MSF course; worth every penny. |
Title: Re: 2003 Savage for $1550 - decent deal? Post by v-pilot on 01/16/13 at 08:58:54 Yeah, check the tech section. If it's showing any signs of the typical Savage issues it may give you some bargaining power...they're relatively easy to fix yourself. I got a '97 in Oct with 2,900mi for a Grand...somewhat cosmetically challenged though, but it was the low miles I was after. |
Title: Re: 2003 Savage for $1550 - decent deal? Post by mikey2004 on 01/16/13 at 19:50:47 i paid 500 for my 99 savage ls650 and it has 16k miles. its a great bike. before you get into it you should read the posts about oil leaks. kind of a common thing on these bikes but no to hard to fix. im taking my motor apart and replacing all gaskets on sat. figure it will take me 6 hours. and thats because im going to take my time and clean everything i can on it. these really are great bikes. |

I'm in a little burg called Bedford, about 12 miles off I-71 Carrollton exit and right on Hwy 42. Something to be said for year-round riding without looking like some crazed looney! I'm getting too old to ride in 30* temps I guess! Looks like you've got a good start on the project scooter. I'm following it ! |
