Title: Bobber build questions
Post by Jahoo on 01/08/13 at 12:57:28

Fender is shaping up nicely. 33 ford tailight is on it's way. Still looking for a sportster tank for around 50 bucks, and haven't even begun to figure out where  going to have the bungs for the seat welded. So what to do while waiting for parts? I'm going to start by working on electrical. I need to make the wires that go to the left handlebar longer, any suggestions or tips before I take this on? I'm thinking splice wires close to headlight, add a few inches and replace plastic covering. Sound about right or is there an easier way? Oh here's the new trailer fender on the bike, I'm looking for a metal shop to make me better strong brackets then the ones I have for the finished project.

Splicing all those wires is a pain in the a$$ so make sure you take your time and give yourself plenty of wire to work with for turning the bars to full lock in each direction. You don't want to do this twice :-/

The length of wire won't make a difference if you run your wires properly. The wires should run vertically - following the axis of the neck - so they simply twist slightly as you turn your bars. If your wires are pulling in and out as you turn your bars, you did it wrong.

I'm using 10 inch mini apes so I need a few more inches to get the handlebars on.

I'm also running 10" mini apes and had no issues with the stock wiring at all.  There was plenty of slack in the harness under the tank to allow you to pull it forward enough to give you the slack you need, But I also have a 96' that came with the buckhorn bars which have longer cables and wiring then the bikes that came with the drag bars.  Now the Throttle and Clutch cables were a different story,  Yes with some creative re-routing they worked but didn't look to good, so I went with some custom Barnett cables ordered through our friendly Barnett dealer here on the forums.

I've got 10" apes on mine also with no issues with cable length.

What's your plan with the speedo since your putting a sporty tank on it? I'm assuming the hole where the cable goes into the motor has to be plugged unless u r relocating it! I ask because my new tank will be here this week and I'm not sure what I'm gonna  do yet

Hang on let me go take a picture for you...
Here's what I did. Ended up stealing my buddies speedo for this but it works.  Ran one of the bolts that holds the cover through the housing off is my buddies VS700.
Guess I should mention that all my cables and wires worked except my clutch cable.  I have one that's way long and sticks out in front of the bars to work but it still disengages the clutch and I intended to have a "rat" bike anyways so it kinda adds to the style of the bike...gives her attitude!   8-)

I was going to mount the speedo on the left side of the bike, maybe make a bracket off the front tank mount. I haven't pulled any slack from under the tank yet, I thought what was keeping it from reaching the 10s is the split to the head light though.
I spent today working on the clutch cable. Instead of spending a ton of money I'm using whatever I got so I'm trying to fab these universal clutch and brake cables to the bike.my clutch cable is frayed and dangerous so that needed to be replaced anyway. I spent all day searching for solder on cable ends (spoiler alert: I never found them). Pep boys has the screw on ones but they don't fit the clutch handle. I'm going to have to find some off the web some where. If we have someone who makes these I'd love to talk to them. I want to know where to buy the random end pieces like the clutch adjuster and the adjuster for the front brake. I'm going to do my own cables for my sportster if this works out, but don't want to search as hard as I have for misc cable pieces.

Bubba that's what I was going to go for with the tank and the speedo. Hopefully I can relocate the petcock like he did. Stole this picture from Demin but had to because that's the smoothest looking sportster tank set up I've seen so far.

Dual throw toggle switches in water proof rubber boots. On-off-on. One for headlight, one for turn signals. Mount them to the top triple tree directly or off a little sheet metal bracket clamped via the riser caps. Gets rid of the ugly as sin switch boxes, no wire stretch.

Clutch cable for 10" mini apes... VN700/750/800A Kawasaki. triple adjustable at perch, mid run and at trans mount. $26 Running 15 inchers get a +4 cable.

Misc bits? K&L Supply, Cycle Gear, most indie shops.

Got tired of trying to find a clutch adjuster so I built my own.  Me and my angle grinder have become quite good friends.http://i1085.photobucket.com/albums/j435/Mcnasby/74FC8ED5-380A-4F4C-B500-7D4F710D1D67-8681-000002604473A110.jpg

Got my tank today ripped old one off set new one on but haven't mounted it yet. Looks good so far

It's more the fact that where it splits to the headlight is keeping it from reaching not so much the actual length of wires.

How did that tank slip past me? Let me know how the mounting comes along. When I find my tank bubba I'm hoping you can help me out with welding the mounts.
I'm now trying to locate the right size throttle cable nipple. Does anyone know where I can buy one online? Just the cable end not the whole cable. If not does anyone know the size? I'd really just like to find a pack of misc. sized nipples so I don't have to ever search for these again.

Awesome is that the right size for the throttle handle? This wount be one of those "tell em large marge sent you" moments will it?
Since I have to take a brake from handlebars I started on the tailight. I'm using a 1933-36 ford tailight (model a?), so I built a quick side mounting bracket out of sheet metal.

Cleaned it up a bit later but wount paint it till I have everything ready for paint.

You'll have to ask them what sizes are available, I use off the rack cables for other bikes on my builds. Used to have the Motion Pro catalog almost memorized, shop had dozens of each cable in a rack to play with.

They might want to know how you heard of them. I took a couple years off from Do The Ton, but since I'm back to working on my street legal tracker I restarted my membership.

So I'm having some trouble with electronics. The original light has three wires coming out but my model A only has two. I'm going to hook up my battery again and start figuring out this little problem but any insight would be helpful. I also just found out that my state does not require turn signals so I'm removing all the wiring for both front and rear blinkers. Any electronics I can get rid of I'd be happy to take off this bike.

One is ground, one is tail light, one is stop.

In two wire lights (hardly diaperson) the frame is ground.

Got it working so the tailight lights up only when I use the front brake. Any ideas on what to check to see why the rear isn't making the light come on.

Follow the cable from the brake pedal it goes up to a little switch pull on it if that makes it work then it just needs adjusted u will see what I mean I it doesn't follow the 2 wires from that switch up an make sure they are connected if u don't understand what I mean I will take a pic for ya and By the way If you r not tagging historic then u do need the blinkers also tag has to be horizontal. But I've only heard of a couple people catching hell for it

I put an extra hole in the bracket so it can be made into a horizontal tag if I get hassled by old johnny law.

Started messing with the brake light haven't gotten it to work perfectly yet. Still tryin to figure out how to hide the wires the best to clean up the lines alittle better. Maybe cut the tape holding them all together and just rewrap them in a decent new configuration. It's been cold as hell here in MD, and I'm still hung over from the ravens pats game (apple pie moonshine victory shots were a bad idea) so my progress has slowed. I'm hoping to on Thursday to finally tackle my wire issues and finally have it clean enough to start thinking about seat and springs. I'm really digging the raw metal look, is there a way to protect the metal without painting? Maybe a clear coat over it? Or will that just make it shiny and not as raw looking.
