Title: Military poll...
Post by Serowbot on 01/07/13 at 22:45:17

I'm on a poll kick, tonight...

We spend more on militarism than the next 13 largest countries... combined...
We are 5% of the world,... and we are 41% of the worlds spending on military...
We're walkin' into the bar,... 6'-5", 320,... with an AK,... and a nuke...  (and there's an aircraft carrier parked in the lot)... (surrounded by battleships)...(7 drones hover overhead)...
:-?...

Now,... hey... I get it... we're no.1!....
... but, what if we just spent double of what any other country spends?...
(I mean,... if I was twice the size of some a-hole,... I'd feel pretty good about my odds)...

Show me yer' vote... :-?...

Our military budget just like all of our government budget needs to be cut by a big margin.  We as the U.S.A. have a bad habit of sicking our nose and the lives of our men and women in the service into areas of which are none of our concern, when there are much more pressing matters here on the home front that need to be addressed instead.

Maybe someone can dumb this down for me or set me in my place but...

I am fine with having a military.
I am fine with weapons development.
I don't like a large standing army.
I don't see why we spend so much in foreign aid with people in the US dying of starvation and stricken with poverty.
We are not the world police.

We can save a lot of money by bringing troops home, even from friendly European countries. US troops are not well received by the host countries and we spend too much money there. I was stationed in Germany for 3 years. The Germans would try to get into vehicle accidents with us or invite us to use their farms for training exorcise then hold their hands out wanting money for damages.

We can also save lots of money by not sending so much out for foreign aid to countries that don't like us.

I think that we need a strong military and we should spend foreign aid money here in our own country first.

It's about the money.  All of that military money is going people who do *NOT* want the military reduced.  They killed JFK, and every President since knew/knows if they want to live.

BTW there is a reason we need to be bigger than the next 13 combined ...

We fight wars around the world. Not just our borders.

You have a budget the size of vietnam, you have to be right next to vietnam to win.
You need a budget 1300 times the size of vietnam, so you can go to vietnam and ... lose.

I suggest we do all wars remotely ... drone drone drone, bomb. Done.

Cool.

You are not familiar/experienced with how a war works then.

I can tell you from personal experience, you can bomb the enemy back to the stone age and you STILL will need boots on the ground. Coalition bombed Iraqis but we still had to go in to remove them from Kuwait.

There are plenty of examples of how bombing alone does NOT work.
Germany trying to bomb Britain into submission
Allies trying to do the same to Germany and Japan
French and US bombing NVA
Coalition bombing Iraq during Desert Storm

Very difficult question actually. This country needs to cut expenses. We have wandered places where we should not go. But for the most part adults are just older children. Remember "King of the Hill" (the game, not the TV show). For the most part all the other kids work together to take out the one so that person on top had better be awfully strong.

Now I know a whole lot of people will say we dont need to be the King. In fact we should just all be equal. But that is not how human nature works. Someone will be King of the Hill. So let me ask a new question. Givin the perameter I have set. Who do you want to be the King of the hill?

I voted double... and would settle for much less. We have become the world police and spend government dollars "for american interest" meaning to protect oil.  never beem for it... money or no... just not what I believe we should be about.  Close most of the off soil, bases.. close most of the state side bases.

We proved in WWII, its not the army you have... is the productivity to build the army you need.  We have put it backwards since... the army we have is destryoing the productivity we could have to ramp up ( a new army) in the future.  Swiss has it right.

WW2 ended in the pacific - when japan was bombed ...

However we could not have used that against germany. The friendlies were closer than in japan, but boots on the ground in europe, were also heavily supplimented by the supportive locals. If you try that in a country where you have no local support - like afghanisthan ... you will get screwed.

Anyway military budgets are sky rocketign cos we try to police the whole world, and are trying to fight wars with no local support 1/2 way round the world.
Cool.

Paladin is right about the money going to powerful folks who want the military machine to keep chugging.  They supply all the aircraft, tanks, ships, boats, guns, ammunition, radar, sonar, and various other equipment that keeps the machine doing its thing.  Now they've even expanded to outsourcing other stuff like transport, chow halls, and most likely black ops too.  It's big business; 711 billion dollars a year big.  The Chinese came in number two spending 143 billion.  They don't have the same capabilities we do (yet), but they also realize it's a lot cheaper to steal technology than to invent and develop it.

Gotta love arm chair generals. Especially ones that have never served in combat.

You see that would make a decent argument ... if the ones who have served are actually not part of the Military industrial complex.

Much like the gun nuts answer to all the gun related violence ... more guns.
Life is like calculus.

Say x is the number of lets say taco's available to "a" - a constant number of people. How many taco's would they eat - I'll guess x. - But if I want to be glib about it, I'll say its a function of x
OK so if you change the number of taco's ... so x is variable.
How many taco's will they eat as x varies ... easy my friends, its rate of change is = differential of the function of x/differential of x - you see we dont need to know the number exactly at any given point.
And if x->0 aka, there are nearly no taco's ... you'd not eat ... any taco's.

That I would guess works that same way with guns ... or bullets. The whole gun nut argument is that ... that cant be possible, its not a solution, we will shoot it down. Ping pongs are dangerous and killing people. we need our guns to shoot ping pongs when ping pongs attack. Not to mention when soccers and hockeys attack.

Cool.
Srinath.

Actually, my basic premise is that the best war is the one not fought.  The second best war, the one fought somewhere else.  The worst kind is where your home town gets blown up , occupied and then levelled.  Speaking of King of the Hill and Wales...is that where the Englishman climbed up a hill and came down from a mountian (a rather neat movie I thought).

We need 14 aircraft carriers but couldn't manage to keep a few planes off the coast of Libyia?????

Wars far away are safer for civilians, but they are havoc on equipment and personnel.

We cant go to libya, cos we are fighting illegal wars against 2 countries and have been for 10 years. Even with our budget bigger than the next 13 copmbined, its still too much.

Cool.
