Title: Starter clutch gear?... Uh oh...
Post by Serowbot on 01/01/13 at 15:24:36

Anybody remember which way the starter clutch drive gear goes?...
The one between the drive gear and the clutch gear?...

It also has a tiny washer... is that under the gear, or on the outside?...

I'm boogered... it all fell out, when I pulled the case... :-?...

I had the same problem when I rebuilt my engine a few months ago.  The Clymer manual shows the earlier version and it does not give a clue.  My first attempt I believe was with the washer on the inside and it seemed to be correct - however when I put the mag cover on and tightened it down the teeth on the gear hit the outer case.  I ended up putting the washer on the outside and it worked then - but that causes the two idler gears to be slightly out of alignment.  When I looked at the wear pattern that the grooves in the idler gear made - it seemed to confirm the gears are not intended to be perfectly in line.

Glad to hear,.. I ain't the only one...  ;D...

washers go on the torque limiter gear only, 1 on each side.

I don't think it matters how the idle is faced, but try both ways, pick the one that mates with the torque limiter best.

Okay, thanks...
I'm going with the gear spaced to the outside.. seems to line up best...
... and the washer on the idler... (I woulda' missed that one, for sure)...

Found this pic on Savage Greg's companion Cd...
