Title: wheels for my s40 bobber
Post by tremblinjackson on 12/26/12 at 08:33:54

Im looking to get that cool bobber look for my 04 savage.  And looking to throw 21' wheel on the front.. My question is are there any specifics I need to know? Will it fit without a problem?  Sizes or what not?

Adds a whole new perspective to the term "big wheel" ;)

you'll have to adapt the axle, disk and fender to match.

I'd start with the axle 1st... is it the same size?

yes ? then you might not have to change out the hub.

Disk the same size?
Same offset from centerline?
otherwise you'll need a custom disk.

I test fit a late 60s or early 70s 21" spool (no brakes) to mine a couple years ago. Fit fine, but if you want brakes find a dirt bike rim with the same axle size. Stronger and lighter alloy hoop than the stock 19" steel unit. Better wheel bearings too.

You can use wheels from GT series Suzuki 2 stroke street bikes, same axle size, just need to make spacers. I've had a 69 GT750 front drum wheel (early production 19" Brit rip off) on my Savage before. The late 69 and up disc wheel uses the same size axle. But they are some kind of heavy...

Better bet is to start surfing the bike salvage yards online for a complete VS800/S50 front end. Better forks, 21" front rim, better brake parts, better bearings, hub driven handle bar mount speedometer...

If I ever heard this before, I question why I never realized the brilliance ..  8-)

Too easy, takes all the fun out of it?

Which HD wheel? I hope you don't honestly think every 21" HD wheel is the same. Most 21" HD wheels are for wide-glide front ends and they'll never fit between the forks on a Savage. And c'mon, a HD is an imperial bike, nothing on it is going to bolt onto a metric bike.

Ask real questions.

I'd like to know where you found an S50 with a 21" wheel because they come with 19" wheels.

I cannot remember the year that the S50/800 switched but the older ones had 21" wheels.  Newer are 19".

I can cut you some slack on the different types of wheel but there's absolutely no excuse for not knowing the difference between standard and metric especially when you live in pretty much the only country in the world that still uses standard tools.

HDs with forks, brakes and shocks by Showa commonly use Japan sourced wheel parts. Including the axle and bearings. Not sure about now, but Showa used to be a division of Honda.

21" wheels are most commonly found in narrow or mid glide front ends, were also available for the FX Softail Springer. The 21" I test fit to my bike came off a Panhead with an older springer, pre 1948. The hub had a lion for a maker's mark. Very rare, very expensive, more of a collector's item than a viable wheel, even though it did have a grease fitting for easy bearing service.

The Honda Shadow Spirit 750 comes with a 21 inch front wheel. I believe it is a 90/90-21.

Also look for Kawasaki VN800A front ends and wheels. Stock tire is an 80/90-21. And the forks are really well made, with a really decent brake.

Mine was a 1999 model that I put 40K + miles on in 18 months.
