Title: From straight pipe to muffler
Post by Chris Roth on 12/19/12 at 13:12:49

I just finished my swap from the straight pipe exhaust to a wrapped header and Harley muffler.  The bike now purrs and looks so much better, but a few things have changed.

I have a fair amount of popping and flames out the muffler between shifts and after revving. Adjusted Carb tuning screw in a half turn and its much better. Thinking the flow is reduced and running too rich.

I can literally feel it is slower to accelerate. Amazing to me I would notice it this much.  The previous owner had the stock header cut before it tapered down before muffler and bend.  It then had a straight pipe. That was too loud, too much vibration, and looked terrible (poor welds and had standard spray paint silver flaking off.)

Using the stock Pilot and 150 Main Jet.  I installed the flat K&N air filter and was trying to tune this setup.  I have replaced the cut/welded header with another stock one and have it heat wrapped.  I have actually burned a pair of pants, so felt wrap was needed, plus it looks better than the shades of blues my old pipe had.

Do you think turning in the Carb tuning screw a little would help further?  I need to search for some Carb tuning threads... I am used to a car with an O2 sensor to help drive that.

There's a thread Carb Jetting a Progressive Guide on page 3 of the tech section.

Thanks a bunch for that.  I will look into it.  Added a link here so a future person searching may find a match.
