Title: What am I doing wrong?
Post by JBK on 12/18/12 at 05:05:15

It came time to do some adjusting on my valves thanks to the loud ticking noise coming from the top of my engine. Well no now its louder. Per this site, they should be adjusted correctly. Turned the timing nut the direction the tires turn while watching the exhaust side go down then up then intake side go down then up while checking with a straw that the piston was all the way up. Supposedly indicating I was TDC on the compression stroke.  Adjusting valves to .004 and wrapped it all back up. Immediately shut it off cause it was awful sounding. What did I do wrong?

the piston in the TDC can be 2 times...when it is in the compression stroke and when is located at the end of the stroke, prior to the issue of gas it is possible that you adjusted the valves it is in the TDC . check the correctness of just " turn the crankshaft-clockwise and look at the valves...first intake should go down, then up . as soon as they are completely and in this TDC adjust the valve clearances...

looks right, you can check yourself by holding a finger in the hole to feel the compression.

Yea I watched the straw go up and down as I turned the nut back and forth. Definitely all the way up.  Just dont know why it sounds worse. Did I skip a step?

only turn the crank one way

Only turned it a hair to see the straw go back down so I could make sure I was all the way up.  Im at a, lost.

Go back, this time leave the spark plug in, just use the timing mark inside the left side cover plug. YOull know its on compression, cuz it wont wanna turn. Crawl it up there, allowing the compression to bleed thru the ring gaps. Itll wanna roll on past TDC a few degrees as the piston rod/crank pin come past the fullest extension the crank can give it, but thats okay. Its not far enough to roll the cam into contact with a lifter. Check the adjustments, make sure youre using the thousandths & not mm measurements on the feeler gauge & make sure you keep the adjuster in place as the jam nut is tightened. REcheck after everything is tight before the valve covers go on,

The threads on the adjuster screw & rocker arent that great & they lift the adjuster away from the valve tip just a hair as the jam nut comes tight, so its a bit fussy getting it right.,

Thats all I can think of & Im done for the day. Wish ya the best.

I can't see that you did anything wrong...
... all I can suggest is try it one more time...

PS.. the slightest cocking of the feeler can change the reading...

well, if you have several times tried and tested valve clearances and they are within normal limits, and the clicking sound is not stopped, then try again to open the rightside cover and check the timing chain . maybe she loosen? if the timing chain loose appears very similar sound . and  does not disappear after adjusting valves .

Dont know if it was the little talk I had with my bike or you guys brilliance but I got her sounding sweet once again.

Normally we adjust the valve when it's cold.

Your several tries when hot would have resulted in loose valves.

Could have been that. I also snugged the adjusting screw a little more with the gauge in there.

First time's always the tuffy...
Next one will be easier... ;)...

I still haven't had to adjust the valves on mine and I've been riding it since 98...  I've checked them, still within spec...:-?

Cam chain is quiet as well. Speedometer died at 16K miles, several years ago. Has somewhere right around 40K on it.

Just now ready for rear tire #3, front tire #5.

I find it amazing that the rear tires are outlasting the fronts, let alone the mileage you are claiming for them. Are you using Klotz on the tires?

He actually fills the back tire with Klotz so that it stays supple and grips the road better.  ;D

Nope, just take it easy on the bike. It's usually relegated to back road use, flogged the snot out of it for the first year and then treated it like a small cruiser. First few years it ran on Castrol 20W50, when the oil formula got changed it was switched to Delo/Delvac/Rotella 15W40. When I want to ride for real I take something bigger, even if I have to borrow one.

We've got a 1999 1500 Drifter here with 78 thousand miles on the original clutch...

I go through fronts 2 to 1 to rears...  Must be the power slides... :-?...

Quality rear tires run at tire mfg pressure recommendations. $20 surplus front tires. Speeds kept reasonable for the weight of the bike and its lousy brakes.

A couple wires left to go and paint the sides of the rear fender and it's back on the road. Just need to add the new headlight toggle switch and turn signal toggle switch. Deleted the bar mounted stock switch boxes, they finally fell apart internally. Cheap plastic contact mounts.

HOws that adjustment coming?

Title: Re: What am I doing wrong?
Post by JBK on 12/22/12 at 09:24:24

Went out that next night and tried it again.  Seems I wasnt tightening the adjusting screws tight enough with the gauge in there.  Got it running smooth now

Good deal. It takes a couple tries to learn where the "sweet spot" is during valve adjustments. Savage valve adjusters are a straight up clone of older Toyota 20/22R units. With a lot less room to insert the feeler gauge... >:(
